Is it possible to remove???

I have been seeing a bunch of older boats with those tall wings on the back (like Miami Vice style)..... is it possible to remove those things? Do most of them just bolt on or are the 'glassd on as part of the boat? Have any of you ever removed one of these things.... if so how difficult was it?

45sonic 03-25-2008 07:30 AM

Yes it is possible to remove them. Unless it is built into the boat (then that is going to require cutting and reglassing and either paint or gelcoat). Most are bolted and 5200ed which can prove to be interesting to separate sometimes. Patience and some prying help. Then all else fails do as I do get a BIG hammer :D:D

This and a good glass guy....

Almost all are bolted

Or just put it on the trailer and drive through here......

or once the bolts are off use piano wire with gloves works.

niceguy 03-25-2008 09:22 AM

Awesome. I was hoping for bolts. I've actually used a variation of the piano wire for removing badges and stuff from cars/motorcycles. Works very well.

Fountain38SC 03-25-2008 09:29 AM

Took mine off to paint it. 2 Bolts - no glue. Make sure you have help. I could lift it but getting it off the boat was another story.

jhiguy377 03-25-2008 10:03 AM

I'd be very careful keeping it off permanently. High speed stability could be adversely affected. Midship laminar airflow enhancement is critical to compress trailing vortices from the windshield on these models. See Dodge Daytona Superbird aerodynamics for supporting evidence of this REALLY IMPORTANT phenomenon. Be careful out there - Jeff

Now here's an option :)

Mine used to have one....
And I haven't had adverse aerodynamic effects as stated before...:D

It was removed and replaced with diamond plate to cover the holes before I bought it.

joew. 03-25-2008 01:22 PM

I have one on a Baja I am trying to sell. I think if it doesn't sell fast I will remove the arch and re-list. It should be pretty easy. I like the diamond plate idea. Is it 5200 down or screwed?

sommerfliesby 03-25-2008 01:24 PM

Been so long since I've looked at the boat I don't remember! I'm pretty sure it's 5200.

Sounds like you need to move to TX. I was out three times last week:evilb:

back in the late eighties , early nighties guys were putting then on there boats. I almost did:o:eek::D. glad I didn't. art

Perlmudder 03-25-2008 01:51 PM

could you actually design a spoiler so that it would give the back of the boat lift? i hear about people that require props with stern lift, was that ever the idea of them or were they purely for the "look"?

once saw a boat with 2 spoilers, does that make it twice as cool as a boat with one?

I agree Jeff. The increased velocity of the air over the glass during acceleration is inversely proportional to the reciprocal of the bi-lateral flow and can give you up to five knots extra speed!

And to answer the original question...YES, it comes off with bolts.
But why on earth would anyone want to remove a radar bridge?????
After all.........where would you hang your wet towels?

Holy ***t man, are you being serious? :evilb: LOL. I wasnt trying to get that technical, but I do appreciate the tech info, although it is almost greek to me.... (read... I'm not an engineer). hahahaha.

My favorite idea was the driving under the bridge. Thanks for the laugh guys.

niceguy 03-25-2008 03:52 PM

I am having to disagree with the wing and airflow theory on a 85 mph boat. The example you gave with the car, is probably spot on since the car moves over 150mph. 99% of all wings on any craft, is not gonna provide enough force (up or down) to make a difference under 140 or so mph, unless it has some serious angles. But hell, like I said I am no engineer, just using my drag racing principles here.

phragle 03-25-2008 04:02 PM

you are ALL missing the point!! I makes a great place to mount a brass stripper pole....................

StraightJacket 03-25-2008 05:05 PM

About the only thing the arc lifted on our old Scarab was my uncle when he was to drunk to get out of the boat on his own. That was one of the first things remove on ours.

jhiguy377 03-25-2008 07:50 PM

A stripper pole indeed! There go the aerodynamics all to hell all over again. Phragle, you just don't get it, we're talking PERFORMANCE boats here.....

Sounds like it could be one he** of a PERFORMANCE to me! Where can I buy one? Eh....better make it two! :evilb: Do ya think I could mount some disco lights to it as well? :cool-smiley-026:

You know both of my Stingers have radar arches. You have forgotten the most important thing other than the "Towel Rack"option...

When the boat engines go south and you need to change a frost plug or oil pan, you just hookup a chainfall to them and "Bob's your Uncle"!!!

Instant engine hoist! :D

I know I have been kidding around in this thread with some preposterous BS, but what is the issue with radar arches?

I persoanlly like them..................:party-smiley-004:

How come there are so many that don't?
Let the games begin...

Sometimes.....there's a radar on there! :D

Tinkerer 03-28-2008 08:21 PM

I have radar on my arch. I am planing on removing the arch this spring. I don't use the radar any more and would like to get rid of some weight and loose the CRT off the dash.

BlackJack58 03-28-2008 09:11 PM

Towel rack? Engine hoist?

C'mon now - where else you gonna hange your disco ball? :drink:

1986 - Seattle WA, my old buddy Nick actually rented a disco ball and yes, he really hung it from his radar arch while at the dock in Kirkland - kinda embarassing now, considering I was at the dockside party:D

hahahahahahaha Nice photoshop. I like the disco ball. I will have to mount some light on the arch too so that it can point towards the ball. It'll sparkle like the water!:D

sunchaser796 03-30-2008 09:34 PM

Tall wings

CAN YOU SAY ARCHES ??? Not all boats were designed for arches. Depends on what kind of boat you are installing it on. And yes they are bolted And 5200 if its a Sonic..
