I've been told it is bad luck to.............

rename a boat, is that true? What does everyone think? I'm not that superstitious, just not sure the wife is going to let me keep the name. Its name is......

BEAV'R RETREV'R

I personally like it, but not sure she does.

Boomer35 03-30-2008 02:55 PM

ive heard that too and so far i have lived with the names the boat came with, i would have liked to change them all, and id like to change my current boat name...

is it bad luck?? i dont need anymore of that when it comes to boating then i already have

ive also heard you can change the name but you have to piss in the carb??!! so what about EFI's?

Frequency 03-30-2008 02:56 PM

Not sure, but if your ex-wife is renaming the boat you've already had the bad luck. :hitfan: :D :D

Viperfitness1 03-30-2008 02:59 PM

this link will help. if you are superstitious

Yep just like if you spill salt you have to though some over your shoulder, it's bad to pop a blister berfor the sun go's down. Are you blind or do you have hairy palms?

My buddy had a 31 Scarab and when he got it it was named "The Macharania", he had 10 great years after the name change to "Balance".

apppedigree 03-30-2008 03:28 PM

I have changed mine. I am still alive.

GO4BROKE 03-30-2008 03:35 PM

My 386 was named X-Sonic Rated. I'm not even sure what that means. I removed the old name, haven't yet come up with a new name yet, but I will before summer. Kids want Scream Machine. I don't like it but it does fit. With 3 women on board, someone is always screaming.

MacGyver 03-30-2008 04:40 PM

Mine was "Behavior Disorder III" when I purchased her. To keep the Gods happy, I just removed the III part, so its still Behavior Disorder.

DonziChick 03-30-2008 04:50 PM

I don't think it's bad luck. And I don't blame your wife for wanting to change the name!

PARADOX 03-30-2008 04:59 PM

I can't even buy any good luck. The Formula called "Red Boat" bought used. The Infinity.."Pete's Ordeal" due to the history.
Red Boat is still Red Boat.. Old Avanti. kept the name.. "Cleanin' up" Fliped on higway. Should have changed he name. What's the answer? Buy a new boat and name it what you want. :)

Do the right thing!

It's a BIG deal! Always follow the local ceremonies/beliefs.:p

long duck dong 03-30-2008 05:08 PM

I hear it's bad luck if you change the name...

BUT if you change the name you have to put the old name somewhere on the boat....I did this when renaming the Chris Cat I bought...superstition?..maybe?

seafordguy 03-30-2008 05:13 PM

I renamed mine, and had a trouble free, awesome first summer of boating - I am sure I have jinxed it now, but I wouldn't live with a name I don't like.

burtandnancy 03-30-2008 05:23 PM

That tale goes back to the Clipper Ship days, about 200 years ago...

mwdill 03-30-2008 07:13 PM

I KNOW it's bad luck not to Christen a boat before you take it on the water! :evilb: :D:

formula 382 sr-1 03-30-2008 07:18 PM

I was told that if you change the name you need to keep the old name on the boat somewhere else. We always put it under the dash. :party-smiley-004:

I bought my boat with GET DOWN on her I feel the same way I just don't want to ad anymore problems then I have to so I added a few.. Now its GET DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS.

BlackJack58 03-30-2008 09:03 PM

One tradition i heard of was - before you re-christen, you write the old name on a piece of paper, jamb it in a bottle full of water (so it will sink) - cap it and throw it in a lake. I imagine the Litter Police frown on that one.
Another option is to rubber-band it around a rock. More biodegradable, I guess...:D

pm203 03-30-2008 09:09 PM

It's only supposed to be bad luck if you change the name if you already own the boat and have named it. Buying a new or used boat and changing the name is 100% acceptable to the supersticious gods. That's what the old maritime law says.

1CE 03-30-2008 10:14 PM

Change the name to "so be it" if you have bad luck then you can just say "SO-B-IT", but I bet your luck changed because of some other stupid superstition u-DID ! ps: go by the ol'maritime law and b-done with it ! :p

Jigsaw89 03-30-2008 10:31 PM

I'm not superstitious and therefore believe a name change will be a non-event. If you want some type of security, why not put the old name in vinyl on the bilge bulkhead or the inside of a cabinet, anchor locker, etc.

Clay Washington 03-30-2008 10:56 PM

I changed the name of my current boat. When I bought it, the name was Who's Your Daddy?

I changed the name to TWISTED

I have had good times on it! :D

sleeper_dave 03-31-2008 10:10 AM

I've heard that you need to wear red socks on the boat if you change the name.

Gotta love superstitions!

salesmanship 03-31-2008 10:41 AM

No problem if it's a new boat to you.
However make sure you don't have any bananas on board if you do any fishing.

Joe Todesca 03-31-2008 11:24 AM

You should not carry any item witch bears the old name after you purge the name from the ledger of the deep and from Poseidon's memory! The old name should be written on a metal tag in water-soluble ink. Then dropped from the bow of the vessel during such ceremony.

Here's how boating luck works...

Buying boat- bad luck

Buying bigger boat- more bad luck

Buying boat with bigger engines- really bad luck

Buying boat with MORE engines- truly tempting fate

Selling boat- good luck.

Hope that clears things up.
:)
