Exhaust out the side
I noticed that many boats set up for racing have the exhaust exiting out the sides. Is there a reason for this? Why don't builders do this on pleasure set ups?

I think the first boat to use side exhaust was Ted Saboreese 47 Fountain INXS. The only reason for side exhaust is to project more sound toward the crowd on the beach. It only works on a full staggered setup and it really opens up the engine bay around the rear motor.
Here is a shot inside of The Muscle Super V when it ran blower motors. Notice the side exhast. Not sure if any builder other than Fountain has ever done this. |
Actualy..four winns did this on 261 Liberators for a few years. A guy I knew had this on one with 460's in it.

a friend of mine has side exhausts on his
2001 Chapparal and I know Marada have had them . It seems like I've seen them on other brand boats too. |
I have a friend with a 241 Liberator with side exhaust and had another friend with a 211 Liberator with it as well. It seems Four Winns did it for a lot of their Liberator models.

A friend of mine has a Chapparal with side exhaust, although not that high up. They are just above the waterline on his boat.
