Unhappy Engine Rebuild/ New to OSO

Hey there everybody. I've been reading the post and checking everything everybody seems to be pretty cool.

Well I finally got me a boat - a 98 353 fastech w/twin 502 mags. the other day I was out and the starboard motor failed. Oil and water all over the engine hatch. Got the motors pulled and the starboard motor striped down to the block. Looks like the the intake failed at rear where it blocks the rear water port on the head. The intake rotted away right there and dumped water in to the valley. Is this a common problem?? Any remedies to keep this from happening again? Rest of the engine looks good the motors where quicksilver repowers the tags say 04. the water jacket are pretty clean no scaling, didnt bend any rods. So i think i can get away with honing, rings and bearings. Does any have or know where i can get lower intake? Best place to get a rebuild kit? Any thing else i should do while there out?

This is my first personal boat and it was the first time out takeing the fiancee out (she was thrilled about the motor after we just spend the money to buy the boat) But i dont think anyone could have known it was going to happen. Bad luck i guess.

I appreciate any help.
David

Have a merc dealer check the serial # on that block tag and see when they were put into service. Merc has a 2 year warranty on most of the quicksilver long blocks.

Thats good know. I'll check but if it is i doubt it would be covered. Because the intake failed and not anything with the rebuilt motor.

Thanks for the help,
David

Just to be clear........this has nothing to do with the failure..........only that if there is a problem......then you need to act faster.

You can have those repaired. They are very expensive to replace.
