1 Dies In Jet Ski Accident On Mandarin Creek
POSTED: 3:56 pm EDT May 10, 2008
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 19-year-old man was killed and an 18-year-old woman seriously injured early Saturday afternoon after the personal watercraft they were riding collided with a small boat on Durbin Creek.
No one in the boat was injured.
Another boater got the two victims out of the water and to the Julington Creek boat ramp at the end of Hood Landing Road, about 2 miles from where the incident occurred.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, the woman transported to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center by air ambulance. She was reported to be in critical condition.
Officers said both were wearing life-vests, but were injured by the impact. The names of the victims were not immediately released.
"It's a hard time right now, especially for the parents of those kids," said Ken Johns, who was boating nearby. "It's just heartbreaking, to tell you the truth."
Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officers they were investigating whether speed in the narrow and winding creek played a part in the collision. They said a blood sample was taken of the man who operated the boat, standard practice in a fatal boating accident.
Officers said it was too early to know if charges would be filed.
