35 Donzi ZR

looking for some opinions on the 35 ZR good, or bad. quality, handling, size, can this boat handle bigger horsepower over the 525's ? is the cabin usable as a weekender overnighter.? How would it compare to a 35 fountian lighting? thanks

Macklin 05-11-2008 01:56 PM

Both nice boats. I have not ridden in a ZR, but climbed on one in Miami. There are a load of threads on here about them. Do a search. I have spent a good bit of time on my buddy's 35 Fountain. Nice ridding boat as well. But, from what I have read about the ZR hull, it is well proven.

But weekender? NOT! Cabins in both are tight at best. But maybe that's just me. I like to be able to walk into my cabin, not have to basically get down on hands and knees.

Why the limited list? There are so many great boats out there in that size range.

Shanghied Again 05-11-2008 06:49 PM

The 35 ZR is a great running boat, she is solid and I ran two of them in poker runs, The fastest I have seen a 35 ZR go was 101mph and that was with 625 Ilmors the boat handles extremely well and is a solid running boat. Room in the cabin is low and the boat is made more for speed she runs flat and has very little chine at top end.

Chad, when I was sitting in one all I could think is that if I'm going
to have a sit down boat, it's going to be a cat.

Something else to consider whatever you get: My Nordic 35 at 8500 pounds
and two stock 575SCi are at the limit of practical reliability for Bravo (XR) drives. If you get anything bigger, more power, or a cat, in my opinion you
need #6 drives.

My 38 Comp is a sit down boat but the 35 Zr has dropout stand up bolsters. The 35Zr is an awesome running boat but does lack cabin headroom. Any 35' boat you will have to make a compromise on however, speed vs. cabin room.

TexomaPowerboater 05-12-2008 08:36 AM

Ditto on the cabin, walked around in one at the boat show. The cabin in my 28 apache feels more roomy and has a lot more headroom.

JCat 38 05-12-2008 01:35 PM

I'll agree, the cabin is low, had to crouch way down to get in. Ended up buying the 38 ZX instead and glad I did!:cool-smiley-026:

Got to love the room in a ZX. Thats why my wife fell in love with our 33ZX not the fastest boat she is roomy.

Everyone has an opinion here is mine, Donzi great boat but the Fountain will walk away from it speed wise, period. With those two boats its going to be a trade off, comfort vs Speed.

Up to you what is more important, as for the 525's, depending on your wallet both can handle more power. 35 Lightening with 525's is hitting over 100mph.

Yes the Fountain 35 is a nice boat but not a true 35 in running surface. The Donzi is a true 35 in length and does give you a better ride in the rough stuff. I have drove both the Fountain and the Donzi. When it comes to running Poker Runs I will take the Donzi.

Donzi.........

thisistank 05-12-2008 09:26 PM

I've been on the 35ZR and was impressed immediately (after honestly not having very high expectations). VERY nice boat. solid as a rock. I would own one in a heart beat.

Tom A. 05-13-2008 08:04 AM

A staggered 35 Fountain will beat a 35 Donzi Zr with the same power. A side by side 35 Fountain will be about heads up, especially if there is a good chop. If you go staggered you will loose a lot of space on the 35 especially because it is a small 35.

Have you taken a look at the 33 Active Thunder?

Side/side 525EFIs is 92mph+, and will have a cabin bigger than any of the boats you have mentioned. It also has more freeboard than any of them as well. With the bolt on swim platform, its the same if not longer than the 35 Donzi and 35 Fountain. It can be built with side/side front bolsters or split front bolsters; your choice.

Some specs:
50" of freeboard at the front windscreen
42" of freeboard at the backseat
67" of headroom in the head at its deepest point (with side entry cabin)
74" long V-berth; 69" at widest point to 22" at narrow point
66" of headroom in the cabin as you enter (deepest point)

Here is the latest one:

Ping me if you want more info. You won't be disappointed.

Brian, I was starting to worry about you. This thread was 2 days old, and you hadn't flogged the benefits of AT yet.
Glad to see you're still around.....:evilb:

Just to keep on topic, here is the 35 ZR that is now owned by one of the guys from the NJPPC (Gerry). I was lucky enough to navigate it during the the 2006 1000 Islands with Frank from Typhoon, and we were pulling in boats all day long.
With 525's it flys.
The second pic is to give TomA something to aim for this year..... :D

Dude, it took you this long to bring the Active sermon on this thread!:p You are slippin'!:party-smiley-004:

FeverMike 05-13-2008 06:26 PM

Oh I ment to also say...I love the 35 Donzi ZR...great looks and love the flatter looking deck. I like the looks of the Donzi much better than the 35 Fountain.

It's not a standard setup, but yes it has been done.

"Not a sermon; just a thought." I'm just helping to spread the word.

I'm bringing the boat, the Jack, and Adam....
You are supposed to bring the Molson 6.0 and the babes!
:ernaehrung004::ernaehrung004::ernaehrung004:

P.S.- Are you running with me this year? You have a seat if you want it. It has been two years since I ran my own boat up there and my GPS is the only thing that is not that great on my boat. I don't know if I will upgrade it before the run.

Tommy, I'd love a seat from Abay to Ktown.....
We'll have to talk about the rest. You know where my loyalties are...... :party-smiley-004:

Tom A. 05-14-2008 11:24 AM

Yeah but your loyalties are only maxing 75mph......:p
We should be maxing right around 100ish....:evilb:
Unless of course you go to the Dark Side, but then we would have to call you Racer Z because Racer X and Y are already taken!:grinser010:

Tom A. 05-20-2008 09:47 AM

Thought I would bring this thread back to the top. I was just talking with my friend over at Donzi and he was telling me they are coming out with a special edition 35 Zr. He said it is going to be a real hot-rod. :evilb:

I wonder what they have up their sleves!:party-smiley-004:
