Outdrive issue
One person was in the boat and getting ready to take off from an idle. The boat started to take off and then engine reved and the boat went nowhere. There wasn't a smell of burnt rubber or any noticeable rubber in the bilge. It also doesn't appear to be a prop hub issue. With the engine running, the boat has some problems shifting into forward gear. It will go into reverse, but some issues going into gear. This is all second hand info. Any ideas of what happened? BTW, it's a stock 502 mag in a 25 Outlaw.

Sounds like the coupler went south.

Would a bad coupler prevent the boat from shifting into gear though? Doesn't that sound more like a gear issue? Unforunately I left earlier today so I was not present when this happened.

It is difficult to shift a Bravo if the inputshaft is not turning.

You might have stretched your cable. Play with your cable adjustment.

Well guys if it gears there will be chunks of metal in lube on magnets. The drive is supposed to get grease in the input splines every season. Often over looked. The input is steal and the coupler spline is aluminum. Lack of lube will toast the splines. Also easy to check. Either look at imput with engine running or turn prop while in gear with engine off.
If the coupler fails from an alignment issue you smell rubber. If it fails from lack of lube you do not. It just works one moment and not the next no if ands or buts. Done. |
