OT: Had a great weekend snowmobiling !

My girlfriend and I and two other couples went to
the UP of michigan for a snowmobile trip. We went to a town called Naubinway which is about 25 minutes west of the Bridge on highway 2.
I was REALLY surprised at how much snow and how good the trail conditions where.
We ended up riding a total of 260 miles in a day and a half. The trails were so good we rode between 50-60 mph ,not too bad considering it was my girlfriends second time snowmobiling. There were a couple of straighaways that I hit 105 on the speedo. What a fricken rush !
It was a good weekend ,noone crashed and none of the sleds broke down.
the sad thing is when we woke up Sunday it was 48degrees out ! It went from mid 20's to almost 50 over night ! Then today it was 60. Even though
I had a great time snowmobiling , today's weather
had me thinking about the boat .

Playn 02-25-2002 09:50 PM

Sounds like a great time. I had thought of going up to Curtis but didn't:(

I need to get some time on the new sled. A whopping 100 miles on it this year:mad:

kaama82 02-25-2002 09:52 PM

Hey, I'm a snowmobiler too, but somehow when the first of Feb. rolls around I just start thinking about boats.:D

Playn 02-25-2002 09:57 PM

This winter I was actually wondering why I even winterized it:rolleyes:

26scarab 02-25-2002 10:00 PM

Playn,
It's a good thing you didn't go to Curtis.
We talked to quite a few people that came east
from Munising,Seney, and Curtis and they were
out of snow and if the trail had snow it was
real rough. It seems like anything east of Curtis and north of Newberry had a ton of snow.

Playn 02-25-2002 10:10 PM

26Scarab,

Yeah, the trail reports aren't looking too good in Curtis but a lot better like you were saying east of Newberry. I am trying to get up there in a few weeks (if there is any snow left). Heck we may even get some down here from the looks of things in the next couple of days...too bad no base:rolleyes:

26scarab 02-25-2002 10:15 PM

Playn,
We have a cabin rented in Hulbert for next weekend. This will definitly be the last ride.
It is just the guys this weekend so I'm sure some of the sleds will come back broke or bent !
We are just hoping that 12+ inches hits up there ,if not I'm going to stay home and summerize the
sleds.

Playn 02-25-2002 10:24 PM

Hope you guys don't have too much carnage to haul back.

We usually have a guys weekend the second weekend of Tip up Town but this year the weather didn't cooperate and we took the families up and ran on the slush for the weekend. Were really hoping for a little more sleding in a few weeks but for now we are throwing in the towel , breaking out the golf clubs and heading to Vegas this thursday:D

26scarab 02-25-2002 10:31 PM

I saw some people golfing today on the way in to
work, I think it is Chandler park course (off of I94)
Have fun in Vegas and don't spend all they money, save some for the boat:D

michigan trail groomers

i've been sledding for about 10 years now,we've been to quite a few locations in MI. The only place we've ever found worth a **** is Marquette.Been to Cadillac(rails&trails rules)Alleghan(sucks). We actually stopped a guy in Alleghan and asked if he'd seen a groomer , and he said "what's a groomer?". The best ridding i've ever done is in Wisconsin...........Antigo,Pickeral,Eagle River,Crandon. U.P. is always good riding though. POLARIS...LET THE ASS KICKIN BEGIN! I hope summer comes soon:D :p

26scarab. I am really thinking about it. If this snow comes the way they say I will for sure. Michelle is not to keen since she went 200 miles in one day on ther 7th time out. I am working on going if even by myself so I will keep you posted. I will know by wed/thurs and will leave fri afternoon. You are welcome so i will let you know. Believe me I am pushing for this. I hope I win.

velocity260 02-25-2002 11:39 PM

You guys are lucky last weekend we had no snow now, it has not stopped since this weeknd. Parts of Marquette County got up to 12" last night. But compared to last year we dont have hardly any snow. This always happens though the Snow storms start late in Feb then stops about mid March.

That is crazy when you don't have snow over there. I hope it snows until the end of April.

Mitch,
Keep me posted , I too will be leaving Friday but probably in the morning. I hope, I've got an engine to build and reinstall by then, my dad broke the crank in his first time out. I just got
the crank in and the cases together before I left for work today so tommorrow will be a thrash fest.

Maybe we can meet up somewhere.

MitchStellin 02-26-2002 12:15 AM

That sounds good, where are you going? My place is open if you want or we can meet.

26scarab 02-26-2002 12:29 AM

Mitch,
Me my dad and about 6 other friends have a cabin
rented in Hulbert.
Thanks for the offer though, if it was just me and the old man I would take you up on it.
Hopefully I can get his sled (XCR700) put back together in time.

I probally had 6" in my yard last friday now I have 2feet.

LEOPAJJM 02-26-2002 08:23 PM

Just got back from North Bay, Ont. sunday...had plenty of snow and Blue Lights !!!

Playn 02-26-2002 09:16 PM

Shane, Don't feel bad, I bought a 2002 ZR800efi this year and have only put 100 miles on it. I kept the 95 580 EXT efi and have been tring to get the wife interested in sledding but it's an uphill battle. The weather has obviously not been cooperating too well this year or we would have been out more and on some decent trails. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed though that we have some good weather in March

Rambunctious 02-27-2002 10:38 AM

Let's go !!!

"........G.M. All trails in Grand Marais were groomed again last night. Several inches of snow fell throughout the 95 mile trail system and we are reporting the trails in good condition. In the woods throughout the snowbelt we still have over two feet of snow for snowmobiliers to play on. The groomers are able to groom some of the two mile route into town from the East by going on and off the plowed snow banks and around the fire hydrants. When it does snow the county road commission leaves some snow on the shoulder of the road which helps a lot......."
