Round Britain Power boat Race
The Round Britain power boat race started today at around 5AM Florida time...ROUTE...
http://www.roundbritainrace.co.uk/course.htm
and goes on for 10 days June 30th finish
There are many varied boats taking part from Historic, Classic, production, RIB's and current race boats
http://www.roundbritainrace.co.uk/entrants.htm
such as last years Buzzi diesel engined 46' boat from evolution P1 and Silverline another Buzzi from Super Sport P1 their is also a 100+ mph Fountain taking part together with a famous winged 4 engined diesel boat that won the Key West races back in the 80's and has been completely restored and fitted with 4x600hp Fiat diesel engines giving a speed in excess of 90+mph even when fully loaded with fuel this is therefore the overall favourite at odds of 2:1 on
From an American point of view there has been talk of diesel for powerboating and Fiat seem to be backing the event heavily
http://www.followthemark.net/en/raci...itain/fpt_team
they are also involved in P1 with their 5.9LTR 480Hp engines, I don't know if these engines have ever been installed in an American power boat as yet, but they may prove interesting to follow, there are also many Yanmar diesel engines as well
Within the 50ish entries are some seasoned offshore endurance crews plus quite a few female team members including an all female team, anyhow hope this may prove of interest to some of the OSO members

June 21st The opening leg of the Round Britain race that headed from Portsmouth to Plymouth (Saturday) proved a tough test for much of the large boat fleet. A rough head sea across Lyme Bay slowed many. Despite this Drew Langdon and Miles Jennings in a Super Sport P1 boat were first to finish bringing up Silverline/Original Style home in first place after covering the 130nm mile course in less than three hours. But those further astern were not as lucky.
Race favourites Fabio Buzzi, the Italian winner of the last circumnavigation in 1984 and favoured to win yet again, made a massive mistake leaving Portsmouth Harbour. In attempting a short cut to the start line his 2,400hp FPT Red struck a submerged wartime defence barrier smashing a rudder and one of his three propellers.
The Austrian driver, Hannes Bohinc, was another. The one time round Britain record holder drives one of the fastest boats in the line-up only to blow his engines in the first few miles. Both Buzzi and Bohinc are expected to work through the night making repairs and could rejoin the fleet further down the course.
It was less than ten minutes after Silverline Original Style finished that the Greek entry of Blue FPT of Vassilis Peteras and Panos Tsikopoulos entered Plymouth. They were to take second slot with Nick Gilley and Jon Fuller bringing the Phantom hull, Swipewipes.co.uk home in third place less than a minute behind.
The weather made it a punishing race, the Fairey cruiser 747, crewed by three British Airways Captains was forced to enter Weymouth to put Cormac Lundy ashore with a broken rib.
Garmin a 40' Hunton and carrying TV presenter Nick Knowles retired early with mechanical problems but this was insignificant compared to the luck experienced by the German entered Swordfish cruiser, Blue Marlin. It was while crossing the rough and tumble Lyme Bay that she suddenly sprung a leak. Pumps could not combat the inrush of water forcing the crew to take to their liferaft. Markus Hendricts and his three-man crew were later picked up unharmed by a fellow competitor. but Blue Marlin is now considered a total loss, there are a few other boats that headed for various ports along the route failing to finish
A poor weather forecast for Sunday’s leg from Plymouth to Milford Haven could cause delay or a modification to the course to enable the event to maintain its time-table.

How are the boats that broke, repaired and reenter the next day rated in the total race?
Keep up with the reports.
OK, I went to the link in the first post and have now read the rules as to what can and can not be done.

As usual with the good ole British weather it has let the Round Britain down in a big way with very very high winds creating up to 30' seas in the very exposed far western leg this has given the organisers little choice but to ask all competitors to take the boats by road to the next stage which no doubt will still prove extremely rough and difficult to navigate through
