Are Zoomies legal???????

Is it legal to have zoomies coming out through your hatch????????

seafordguy 06-26-2008 10:20 AM

Enlighten me as to what Zoomies are???

Chris Sunkin 06-26-2008 10:22 AM

You cannot have a non-water-jacketed header in an enclosed engine compartment. No hatch- a water injected zoomie would be legal. If you are talking about something like the CMI tractor header going through the hatch, there's no restriction that I'm aware of.

Chris Sunkin 06-26-2008 10:23 AM

Over-the-transom, water-injected headers- as you might find on a jet or v-drive- like a drag boat.

StraightJacket 06-26-2008 10:26 AM

They run Zoomies on Flat bottoms , but like was stated not on a closed hatch set up , Definite fire hazzard. Seen a guy when I was kid put headers on his cabin cruiser, looked good, but didn't last very long burned to the water line.

There is a set of the CMI tractor headers in the classifieds

closest you can get is CMI tractor pipes. its a header that collects down to a single water jacted pipe that exits straight up or slightly back. they are legal water jacked but the noise is a problem, you would never pass a level test and to be perfectly honest would be WAY to loud for a pleasure boat.

texaschopper 06-26-2008 11:36 AM

What about some of the headers I have seen on a few Outerlimits that go out through the hatch? ie.. XXX

How are they getting around the noise laws? I have only seen pics, but did not look to me as if they have anything to keep them quiet?

302Sport 06-26-2008 11:41 AM

thats what i am talking about like the ones in the classifieds...........tractor pipes i guess

That would be a cool pick of the motors

Chris Sunkin 06-26-2008 12:33 PM

Noise laws don't restrict equipment, they restrict noise. The Coast Guard restricts equipment. If it's OK by CG regs and the noise is below requirements, you're golden. But, the direction your headed is 180 degrees the wrong one. Those headers are for making power in race boats, with no consideration towards sound or legality. They are that length because there's no physical way to craft a water-cooled marine header and have equal size and flow runners and proper collector length and still dump horizontally through a transom.

getchasum111 06-26-2008 12:58 PM

it's ok in kentucky....no noise restictions at all on lake cumberland....

Chris Sunkin 06-26-2008 01:21 PM

Unless you have blowers, the 4-pipes are going to be drastically down on power vs. a header with a collector.

True dat. Way down. The only reason they use them on motors is because the motor needs the quickest easiest way to push the exhaust out when running a blown deal at high boost.

Yeah but they sound really cool and in this narrow hull with 540cu engines, there just wasn't room for anything else.

Chris Sunkin 06-26-2008 03:34 PM

Jesus. What is that thing, a 6' beam?

northernoffshore 06-26-2008 04:06 PM

A super cool stretched magnum.

It's a 34' Phantom - built in 1995 and still racing in Trinidad. Just short of 8' wide.

C_Spray 06-26-2008 10:50 PM

Geez, Ron - Most of pictures of that boat that you posted showed the engines 20' under water.... :D

Liquid Liability 06-27-2008 10:47 AM

Ron P that looks like a really cool set up on the zoomies. I bet it does sound good at WOT!!:D

Thankfully, most of the time it stayed on top of the water.:D

Here's two shots from Key West 1995 and then how it got shipped to Trinidad.
