Champlain Type Boats

I've been looking around at boats lately, and was wondering what those that run them think. I'm not as much concerned with speed than ride. Love at least a cuddy, more preferably, but less than a cruiser. I looked at the Baja 278 performance, and it seemed like a good fit.

Newly divorced, so the budget isn't what it once was. At nearly 53, I don't need the speed jollies I once did. What do you guys think of this boat, or competitors?

jeff32 06-30-2008 10:10 PM

you had a 42 beak right?

VtSteve 07-01-2008 07:25 AM

No Jeff, just my 22. (maybe the whole TD thread thing has made me step up my search)

Post divorce has left my boating budget a bit thinner than it could have been. Just curious as to what the Offshore guys think of rides in the nasty stuff that doesn't qualify as rib breaking.

26 Hustler has a great rough water ride.

VtSteve 07-01-2008 12:34 PM

Nice boat those Hustlers, but not really what I'm looking for.

A very cool layout is the Nordic Rage, the mid cabin is a very cool idea. But I think for this lake, the closed cabin would be the better choice. The Baja 278 looked like the best bang for the single engine buck. Good size cabin and vee. I do have to look ahead though, for a boat I could easily run in salt water.

Worth a look:

If the HP is too much with the blower, just remove and sell it. The boat will still run 70-71 or better depending on setup. The cabin is one of the largest for this class of boat.

Thanks Brian. That sure is a nice high cabin. Love the high freeboard for the kids as well.

I bought my Baja new 10 years ago and have no complaints at all. I've been running in the Gulf for 7 of those 10 years and while bigger is better, I can handle most days out there. Truly a good value for the money.

How about a Formula 272 LS with twin 350 Mercs. ??
Good in rough, low price and will Hold it's value. Besides I think it's classy to. :)

My 26' Infinity is being painted so it's not ready yet, but that might work to.

I would look at this one. http://www.offshoreonlyclassifieds.c...o23615-en.html

It is very clean, runs mid 80's and the guy works right in Burlington, VT.

cowisl 07-01-2008 03:45 PM

you want at least a 28'

Great looking boat, but that was maybe last year's dream, new year, new budget. thirteen years more of child support, and a paying for a house I don't live in. :eek:I'd be looking for a single engine, moderate HP, nothing blown. All I need for my ego is to at least hit 60 or so, nothing outrageous.

Formula's a great boat, always have loved them. But it's not in my budget as of yet. I liked the 280 SS, but with the needed power and the price, doesn't fit. But Formula's are classy, always have been. They do good work.

Steve.. The Formula I got for sale it's in your or anyone's budget. $11,500. $12,000 with trailer.
No issues with the boat. The tachs needs to be calibrated.

What year is that one?

Hate to go back too far, I'm not mechanical at all, practically zero on that end.

1985. The trailer is 1995+-
Nothing needed mechanically. Everything works/looks great.
The tachs are just a bit off from actual RPM's Easy to calibrate or just get a couple new. I love the boat but I got 3 and the Infinity and the Formula, saddly just got to go.
