I think there are better ways than mess with historical 1/4 mile runs. A 300' safety run off zone at the end that is filled with sand seems like a better alternative. That and/or a safety net.

It's terrible what happened, but they shouldn't be so reactionary
to change things.
Let the race teams engineer in the saftey measures they feel are necessary, not change the historical context of the distance.

I think it is a great short term fix. If you read the article, they are shortening it to 1000' while they examine other safety changes.
This interim change was made by NHRA in collaboration with professional race teams. NHRA believes that racing the Top Fuel and Funny Car classes to 1,000 feet will allow NHRA and the racing community time to evaluate, analyze and implement potential changes based on the safety initiatives outlined last week.

Crew cheifs will simply set the engines up to run a 1000 feet, and they will start burning up the pistions, catching fire, etc. at 900 feet.
I think there comes a point where the powers that be in whatever the topic simply can't protect you from dying.
When you step into a vehicle that can excelerate in the manner in which these cars do, the drivers are playing with their lives and know this.
If they (NHRA) feels they need to do something, try putting them in a capsule like drag boats.

After Darrell Russell got killed they went to 85% nitro engine explosions went way down. This year they went back to 90% nitro and are now having explosions and fires again.Leave the distance alone and go to 80% nitro
