Ice makers, what are you using?

I am buying about 60lbs of ice a week to go boating/beach

Wondering what you have to make ice.

Thanks

I like the Ice from sonic... also available at hospitals. But as far as the machine goes I think they are way more expensive

I have an under the counter GE monogram unit downstairs as well as upstairs..makes 35 pounds a day..if space is important it only is 15" wide. The only problem I see is that the ice is that of the smaller kind..so when put in a cocktail the melting starts rather quickly..:D

BY U BOY 07-14-2008 02:25 PM

Mark if you are going to buy a under counter one stick with the Hoshizaki,U-line,scotsman or the marvel. I personally would get the hoshizaki. I have never had a problem with any that I have sold/ They are also the ones that make the Sonic ice.

call me for a hook up price:)
If you need a pump its about 150.00 extra
This unit will be beter for coolers because it makes a large cube and melts slowly

call for the hook up:)

give me a call if I can help.

We have a Manitawoc outside. Makes 400lbs per day. Everybody comes over to fill their coolers on the weekend. Of course they have to bring beer as well:ernaehrung004:

RumRunner 07-14-2008 03:27 PM

I have a Manitowic as well. Got it when a local place was going out of business.

I have a old DD frig outside just for beer, the ice maker didn't work, I bought a new kit around 40.00 and fix it, On freezer side I took out everything except the ice maker and one shelf, I put a new kitchen garbage can to catch all the ice,I ran a water hose to it, they make a adapter that does this, its fills it about 4-5 days, not real fast but when I don't need it I bag it ,put it below on the bottom, its half moon stuff.

Also someone gave me a Scottsman style, makes the small square cubes, about 40lbs? it keeps up pretty good, I took the level sensor and bent it up so it hold a little more now.

the sq ice melts faster that the half moon stuff.

Also bought the kit sump pump/humidifier pump around 45.00,dump it into the washing machine drain

My Hoshizaki is three or four years old, and has been flawless.

We have an undercounter Scotsman in our wetbar.
I've heard they are the best. But ours sucks.
(keep in mind it's also 12 years old)

Were remodeling the kitchen/wetbar and in the market for a new one and it seems like a crapshoot to me.
All have to check out that hoshimoto unit.

I just recommend that you stay away from the Whirlpool made units. Not looking to start any fights. I am just going off of what are service guys work on the most and from what my customers are replacing and why. Just my .02

McGary911 07-14-2008 05:35 PM

Never had my own dedicated ice maker, but our big boat used to be about 1/4 mile from the local ice house. Just pull up, pop the trunk, thrown the guy a $5 and your trunk gets 25 lbs of ice. That was Midway ice in Neptune City NJ. Find out where your local ice house is. All those stores and tackle shops get their ice somewhere, and it's a ton cheaper to go to the source. Many will sell to anyone.

You are right the Whirlpool made 50# ice makers do have a 1 in 3 failure rate right now, they are working diligently to solve the issues with them though....

A 7lb. bag of ice with tax is still under $1.50.....you can't even buy a name brand bottle of water for that. Alright, I am somewhat biased.......I make a living manuufacturing and selling packaged ice to the convenience/grocery store market.......ice out of these small machines you guys speak of is fine if the water is first purified. My product is also not touched by human hands and is lab tested monthly to ensure cleanliness of the equipment/purity etc........Just a plug for the old iceman

Reckless32 07-17-2008 07:29 AM

There definitely is credence to having your own ice maker vice paying $3-4 per bag times how many over the course of a year or years. It adds up in both money and the time to mess around going/stopping to get it whether it be for boating or a party at the house. I'm definitely taking notes fella's. Good post for a change...:ernaehrung004:

BlackJack58 07-17-2008 08:16 AM

Frontgate sells a tabletop ice maker that makes about 30lbs in 24 hrs. ... which might fill your needs. Usually their stuff is of decent quality - but no idea how it will hold up over the long haul. It's here:

Nothing against packaged ice, I haul 20 gallons of gas for the ski's, 60 or more pounds of ice, add beer and bottled water etc and this is almost every weekend.

I'm building a 3600 square foot barn for all my crap and one of the things I will definitely have is an ice maker. My house is a stopping point for some of my buddies on their way to the boat ramp, it's amazing how I never have enough ice, water, gas to get through the weekend:eek:

Sounds like a commercial unit will be your ticket. You've got the need and will have the space for it.
