What the heck??
How fast could these guy's be going???
Had to be Autopilot, but what luck if that's the case.
Possible criminal charges ???

Not good, the only other thing might be a hard tack and being too close. Condolences. :(

Man that is sad to hear.

Semper Fi 07-20-2008 11:51 AM

They said no alcohol involved, but it was calm weather and visibility was good. The yacht owner obviously wasn't paying attention to where he was going to run over the sailboat :(

SEA RAY

McGary911 07-21-2008 07:59 AM

Sometimes autopilot is a bad thing. Reminds me of a case off the Jersey shore a few years back. Guy named Barry Flowers ran over an 18' Grady in his 60' Viking. Killed 3 on the Grady. Daytime. Clear. In the open ocean. These incidents are all sad.....

That just stinks and is real sad, That's the bay they were in not open ocean:eek:. I always keep a eye on boats around me,I been cut off out there, I wonder if the sail boat saw them coming and figured the power boat would give way and change coarse and then when it didn't there was no time for the sail boat to move out of the channel. A few weeks ago we were out and broke down in Mikes boat and going 10mph and a few sail boats would tack in front of us we had white steam coming out of the exhaust so you would know we were hurt and they would be a azz cut us off because its there right:rolleyes: and its sad but I bet thats what happened there but autopilot don't care:eek:. just like going down the highway I always look in the rearview mirror every 20 seconds or so to see if a trooper or car is coming down on me.

I see a 60 boat bearing down on me,I'm getting out of the way.

tblrklakemo 07-21-2008 12:09 PM

thats sad.....makes you wonder, with all that open water, how two boats can collide.

ITS BIG BUT NOT BIG ENOUGH FOR AUTOPILOT and no look out:(:( theres channel markers out there every 1/4 mile or closer.

PJDiesel 07-21-2008 12:48 PM

I've never been on a boat that ran the autopilot in anything other than wide open ocean.

I guess I don't get why in a new(er) 65' sea ray the autopilot isn't tied into at least one radar that would avoid colliding with other vessels....?

RollWithIt 07-21-2008 04:46 PM

Even tied into radar.. You would be willing to rely on Autopilot to avoid other boats. In a bay. I would not be able to rest without keeping an eye out. Maybe the owner just assumed that it would drive around other boats. My thoughts go out to the victims.

Very sad. Always need to be paying attention to your surroundings.
