I was just checking my cables yesterday thinking how long do they last?

fountainguy214 07-22-2008 10:11 PM

well my dad is a boat hoist installer (also builds docks and drives pilings) and the cable life all depends on what weight boat and what size cable, fraying is not a good sign.

DollaBill 07-22-2008 10:11 PM

Yea, I've seen some crazy stuff from lift failures. I had a 61' Hatteras MY shift while my guys were lifting it and had to take a sawsall to it so I could stop the deck from seperating from the hull inch by inch.

The sound of the fiberglass splitting was the eeriest thing I've ever heard.

sleek1 07-22-2008 10:19 PM

I'd think the motors alone would be worth well over $3,800.

fatdaddy 07-22-2008 10:24 PM

 This stuff always freaks me out. I have my lift checked and winterized every year.

AO31 07-22-2008 10:30 PM

Looks the bottom of a canoe. Maybe the strakes fell off too?

triple xxx 07-22-2008 10:38 PM

Does seem like alot of damage from lift failure.

WILDMAN 07-22-2008 10:45 PM

I wonder if the pics are from 2006

Like 10x that.

picture #21 doesn't look like 110% lake x rigging to me:rolleyes:

Edward R. Cozzi 07-23-2008 07:21 AM

Can someone please explain to me why this boat owner calls this thing an "Apache" Chief? What qualifies this POS to be called an Apache? Did he drive it past the Apache factory once on the trailer?

The MIC "IME" doesn't show up in any reference books I've checked.

That rigging in picture 21 looks like @#$%^^!

Ditto, nothing about that boat says apache.

northernoffshore 07-23-2008 08:51 AM

It could of been painted at Mcmanus ? There are a few hull that were built of that brand( don't remember the name) The strakes stop half way up the hull. It was a copy of a 60's race boat

BAJA WILL 07-23-2008 09:20 AM

I never knew a cable can take out the bolsters seats, by un bolting them, drivers side interior and grab bars, while still splitting the back of the boat and side.

My guess is the boat was in an accident and the guy is claiming a lift failure for insurance.

My 2 cents

What exactly does this mean:

Rigged with Lake X Marine (Mercury hi-performance test center) motors sporting over 360 dyno horses per motor.

The 300 XSi Merc's

They look like stock 300XS. What are 300XSi?

The "I" stands for Imitation. :evilb:

That boat looks like it's been dropped off a trailer or a sling. We had an old cable lift like that when I was really young. It broke a few times but never did THAT much damage.

88Fount33 07-23-2008 10:14 AM

If one side fell, the boat would twist as it fell until it struck the side vertical piling that holds the hoist, I could easily see that a twisting fall could do this damage.

Our first hoist was 10,000# for our 28' Twin BBC boat and can tell you that it always felt like the hoist had all it could handle with that rig even though it should have only weighed 9500lbs full of fuel. Replaced cables (upsized them also) as well as pulleys and bearings after 2 years. New hoist is supposed to be 24,000# rated but I would not want anything more than 15,000# on it just because I do not feel that they give these things enough safety factor.

open87 07-23-2008 11:35 AM

the glass bonding the deck to the hull didn't bond:grinser010:

JBoat 07-23-2008 01:37 PM

FYI -

Oil those lift cables twice a year with regular motor oil. It will extend the life of the cable significantly. If they dry out it put extra stress on them.

I finally figued it works after going threw a set of stainless steel cables every two seasons.

WILDMAN 07-23-2008 07:05 PM

I emailed him. They are 30" motors.

Need-the-Speed 07-23-2008 09:21 PM

the guy forgets to mention that the cables failed during a hurricane and they found the boat 7 miles away hanging from a palm tree.:rolleyes:
