Another Boating Accident in Brick NJ

My son is with the Brick Police and Silverton Fire Dept and they recieved a call last night about an accident, News 12 has an article on it but one man was killed and even though they are not sure of the boat that hit and ran the Boston Whaler from the injuries and the one man being be headed they are pretty sure it was a go fast. Why at 1AM in the morning does anyone run hi speed with no moon out.

Hit-and-run boating accident in Ocean County kills one and injures four
by Alexi Friedman/The Star-Ledger
Sunday August 03, 2008, 10:23 AM
State Police are searching for a boat that crashed into a small vessel early this morning in the Metedeconk River in Ocean County then sped away, killing a 49-year-old man aboard and injuring four adults.

The two-vessel accident happened at 1:15 a.m. in Brick Township at the mouth of the Metedeconk River, said State Police Sgt. Julian Castellanos. It was just two days away from a new moon, making it particularly dark outside.

The five victims were aboard a single-engine 17-foot Boston Whaler when the other boat ran into it, crashing over the starboard side then continuing on, Castellanos said.

It was unclear whether the boat that ran into the Boston Whaler was larger or smaller, but whatever damage it sustained, that vessel was able to motor off, police said.

The 49-year-old man from Essex Fells in Essex County was struck in the head and died. His wife and three others were injured, one seriously. All five were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

Police did not release their names.

State Police are still investigating the hit-and-run, and are looking for the offending boat in marinas and lagoons, Castellanos said.

That just sucks:(, condolences to all and hopefully everyone else will recover okay.

DareDevil 08-03-2008 10:08 AM

WOW ,thats a sad one. RIP.

Hope they find him / them .

SHARKEY-IMAGES 08-03-2008 08:32 PM

I would hope the person responsible turns themself in.

Gathering from where it happened, 3 routes to leave the area are all under camera surveillance. 4th area would be to head west with only a limited number of places to actually get the boat out of the water.

Hopefully this will have a quick resolve as well.

My prayers go out to the family and people this effects... :(

kw1605 08-04-2008 03:15 AM

it was right behind my neighborhood. came home from work last night and saw the coast guard helicopter hovering around with its spotlight on. figured it was a boating accident. hope they catch the person. condolences to the family

NJgr8ful 08-04-2008 07:28 AM

Folks keep eyes and ears peeled for any boat with damage in your local lagoons and marinas, ramps, trailers. This is absolutely horrible  Imagine wife and others waiting helplessly while husband lies there sustaining critical injuries, while that scumbag speeds off ... :hothead: I'd want to jump in and start swimming after them until I drown trying ....

Shanghied Again 08-04-2008 08:03 AM

My son said they are searching for a small performance type boat from 20-30 ft in length. I just can't believe someone can hit a boat and not stop. You really have to be a total scumbag, drinking or not how can someone live with the fact they killed someone.

The noose is tightening:

POINT PLEASANT — State Police have identified a 27-foot speed boat as the vessel suspected in a fatal hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning.

The boat's registration is listed to an Ocean County resident, said State Police Sgt. Julian Castellanos.

Robert Post, 49, of Essex Fells was killed. Four passengers aboard the boat were injured. They were Post's wife, Bonnie, 49; Cliff Farren, 44, and his wife Joan, 46, of Radnor, Pa.; and Karen Kelly, 46, of Norcross, Ga.

The injured passengers were taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Joan Farren was listed in serious condition and Bonnie Post in fair condition Sunday, Karen Kelly and Cliff Farren were treated and released from Jersey Shore, police said.

State Police expect to release more information about noon, Castellanos said.

Not good......

Big Time 08-04-2008 12:22 PM

I don't get it....maybe it's just me but I am scared to death to be out running in the dark. I came home two sat nights ago, had an alright moon, and I was at idle for most of the trip.....at one point I went just fast enough to barely get it on plane with the tabs down, but not for long. This sounds a lot like the Candlewood (Danbury, CT) accident...going too fast at night, only this time the innocent person on the boat that was hit was killed.

DollaBill 08-04-2008 12:34 PM

I just don't understand why you have to even be on plane at night.

CAP071 08-04-2008 12:35 PM

Heard he turned himself in through his Lawyer. I would bet he is nice and sober now :angry-smiley-038: Just a wild guess though.

Shanghied Again 08-04-2008 12:52 PM

From the report it was all white 27 with front damage, Trim Tabs busted and the vin numbers scraped off. This guy should be hung, talk about knowing you hit someone. He forgot that there is a serial number on a motor.

What to hell is a Imperial? sounds more like a Bayliner to me.

POINT PLEASANT — Investigators from the State Police and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office are continuing to piece together evidence in the Sunday boat crash that left one person dead and four others injured.

So far no one has been charged in what investigators have termed a hit-and-run on the water.

Troopers believe they have located the second boat from the crash and have today executed a search warrant "in an attempt to recover definitive evicence to conclude whether this is the other involved vessel,"State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones said. The boat was described as a 27-foot Imperial speedboat.

The owner of the boat is a 29-year-old Brick man who has yet to be questioned, Jones said. Police did not publicly identify him further.

"The State Police Fatal Accident Unit continues to piece together the evidence to produce a picture of the circumstances surrounding the crash," Jones said. "The preliminary evidence indicates that both boats were moving at the time of the crash. It is not yet known if both vessels were using the proper nighttime running lights."

Troopers have impounded the boat and taken it to a garage at the State Police marine station at Point Pleasant, Jones said.

The crash occurred at approximately 1:14 a.m. Sunday, in the mouth of the Metedeconk River in Brick, police said.

The Whaler, with five persons on board, was run over by the much larger speedboat, according to a State Police statement.

The owner of the Whaler, Robert Post, 49, of Essex Fells, died on impact from head trauma. The four other occupants were all injured and taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, the State Police said.

They are Bonnie Post, 52, of Essex Fells, Cliff Farren, 45 of St. Davids, Pa., Joan Farren, 46 of St. Davids, Pa., and Karen Kelly of Norcross, Ga.

Maybe an IMP that some reporter thought was an abbreviation for Imperial?

All Seasons (ASI) made boats under the Imperial brand. They did a Squadron 27 splash in the 80's. That would be my guess on the boat they're describing.

I had one and sold it several years ago to some clown from that general vicinity- a concrete finisher. I'm curious if it's the same guy.

I'm pretty ADD- especially when it comes to hobbies. That was a boat that I bought on impulse and realized it would take more than it was worth to get into shape- so off to Ebay it went. There are pics somewhere on the site of it- the prior owner is a member.

berns29scarab 08-04-2008 04:04 PM

they just announced Anthony Digilio of Brick turned himself in

berns29scarab 08-04-2008 04:12 PM

i know the boat...was an all white custom. they popped a hull from and old IMP mold or something...had like a 600+hp single. the boat and owner were tied up at the wharfside for the point pleasant race last year spectating...boat was really nice

Shanghied Again 08-04-2008 04:46 PM

I just talked to one of the police that were on scene. The boat hit the whaler at such a force that it flew over the hull took out the center console and the driver behind the wheel, he was killed instantly. the boat was running at a hi rate of speed. I don't care if the guy was my best friend it takes a big set to run after you knew you hit a boat and possibly hurt someone are in this case killed someone "Drinking or No Drinking" Thats one heartlest bastard that even couldn't stop. He knew how to run and hide his boat.

NJgr8ful 08-04-2008 04:56 PM

There is only one single reason you wouldn't stop. If it was truly an 'accident' and he didn't see the Whaler ... regardless whether or not it was recklessly driving in pitch black at high rate of speed ... that is not illegal ... he would have stopped, why not??

TexomaPowerboater 08-04-2008 05:13 PM

I can think of one reason........the fine is only like $100 for a hit and run on the water. Not saying its the right thing to do. Another reason.....the obvious.....to keep you crew safe and attempt to make port before she sinks. Lots of BS speculation getting thrown out. So far I haven't seen proof of any wrong doing.........cept for the starboard side damage to the whaler, which would indicate that the 27ft boat had the right of way. If its not illegal to go-fast at night on that water, then the boater has every excuse in the world to do it.

Curious - does the location have noise laws?

You have got to be Fu***ng kidding. He was probably tanked now its harder to prove.Thats why he ran.If he was not tanked and had stopped he probably would not be looking at criminal charges as I doubt the boston whaleer had lights on.

Elite Marine 08-04-2008 06:14 PM

Right of way or not, its illegal and immoral to leave the scene of an accident. Hang the son of a *****!! Didnt call to get them help, even if he was trying to save his own crew and then took the serial numbers off the boat??

Forget the hanging, shoot him.

That has to be one of the dumbest statements I've ever seen from someone here on "OSO"...you don't see any proof??? How about the "POS" just ran over a boat and high tailed it home not rendering any aid....That's proof enough in my book and where do you get off saying that because where he torpedoed this boat he's not at fault?

I haven't read whether or not the boat was anchored but if it was that's another item that puts the blame squarely on the driver who left the scene of the accident and it doesn't matter where he hits them.

Its people with your mentality that are going to be the death of power boating as we know it, they are too stupid for their own good and god help anyone on the water when they are out in their boat...

Anyone who condones or makes excuses for someone who leaves an accident that they have been involved in with obvious personal injury is a tool in my book.

berns29scarab 08-04-2008 06:47 PM

lets not turn this tragedy into a typical OSO speculation bonanza !!!. what he did was 100% wrong reguardless of the reason (scared, drunk etc...) the water it happened in is as shallow as 2ft and as deep as 10-12...i've boated right there my ENTIRE LIFE. there are grassy marsh and some sandy beaches all around. i've also heard he had a female aboard his boat as well...

I think Sharkey had pics of the boat that hit the Whaler awhile back on his site. The full story will be on the 11pm news in Jersey. I saw the boat on an earlier broadcast. The NJ State Police have the boat in there custody in Point Pleasant.

bowtie 08-04-2008 08:19 PM

So you can get drunk, run into the starboard side of a boat and just leave everyone to die and it's ok? And if it was your son in the Whaler would you think the same way?
