engines sitting for a year?
 

I just looked at a boat that has not been used for a year, the engines are 525's. What could be the down side if any for sitting for a year?

impeller hardening, bad fuel.

That's my guess also. The rest should be fine . Have new impellers, fuel, and fuel filters installed, and start her up.

Are they 525sc's or 525 efi's? If they are the SC's you might throw a carb kit in there if you want. Could have some dry seals or hoses, but other than that just prime your oil pump and fire that SOB up!

Yes, probably not much to worry about, boats up north sit all winter 9 and 1/2 months in Michigan and start rightup.

It depends on how well it was laid up. if it was just parked, it could have issues with top-end corrosion. Valve springs don't like to sit in one spot- especially compressed. If they had some hours on them to start with, I'd strongly consider a new set- they're dirt cheap.

I would absolutely do a leakdown test. The other advice offered is solid- especially impellers. I replace them every season anyway. Why take a chance on a ruined weekend- or engine?

What Chris said and the following.

Remove the spark plugs and spray some Stabl. and gas mixture in the cylinders. Let is sit for a few hours. Start motors with out plugs and with out ignition to lubricate... with no major stress on the rings. This way you have no compression and if any of the rings are tight.. they will loosen up. Once you start them do not keep them running for more then a fe minute at a time. Old rings may need to "re-seat" them self. Start and run a few minutes at a time...and then you should be fine.
Check the fuel pump.. it will be bone dry and you need to get fuel into it before you start the motors.
In short.. try to lubricate anything that moves..

Thats what I would do.

P.S- On a serious note, don't forget whats behind it too, may not hurt to change lube in the drives and trannies (if equipped)

After changing the oil remove the distributors and prime the oil system.
