New vs slightly used Ilmor?

I'm outfitting a boat w/a 625-Ilmor and may have run across an oppurtunity to get one that has between 20-30 hours. It's being sold back through Ilmor and they will have gone through it and will put a 1yr warranty on it (so I'm told so far). Currently Ilmor is putting a 2yr warranty on their new motors.

I can pick up the slightly used one for $6K less... is that worth the difference in not knowing where it's been (although Ilmor is supposed to go through it) as well as having a 1yr instead of a 2yr warranty.

Thanks in advance! :ernaehrung004:

I hear ya... and will do. What is your opinion on plan a (used) or plan B (new)?

I really can't call that one man.

Thats a tough call. My variables (if i were buying) would be 1. Do I want an additional YEAR of warranty and 2. Options of choice on your engine package vs. what we have thats "used"

your already spending $x, id say another year of warranty is well worth 6k

jeffbare 08-08-2008 07:50 PM

Think of the value of 2 years of piece of mind.

BenPerfected 08-08-2008 08:10 PM

How many hours a year will you run? What is the hour life of new before rebuild? Maybe ask for 18 mo warranty on the used?

customryder 08-09-2008 08:49 AM

offer them 6k less for the new one?:drink: they will say no at first..

Break'inWind 08-09-2008 09:46 AM

Good information fellas... I'm also leaning to the 'new'... for all the same reasons. I'll see what they come back with and go from there. I just hate to spend that much on an engine package and not know what the first fella did during the break-in period and so forth.

My hours a year aren't too great, usually about 25-ish due to the length of season where I live. So having 20-30 hours on a motor is like loosing a year for me... not sure that sits too well w/me.

Hey Ilmordude, on your 'option 2', what do you mean on choice of your engine package? I was under the impression that the only real options are 'what color do you want'... Are there additional items to decide (options?)?.

ILMORdude 08-10-2008 05:33 PM

Well yea that being the obvious option and depending on what engine you choose (570, 625, 710) you have regular or polished manifold, black or polished pulleys, color-matched heat exchanger, header styles, etc. Might be a good idea to contact the office and get a "quote" for a new, with your selected options, engine package and go from there. -Later-

Thanks for the followup... I guess I knew about those options except for the polleys and heat exchanger...

Thanks... I'm going to go w/the new I believe. I'm working the details out w/the dealer right now, so we'll see where we end up. In the end I just couldn't go w/the thought of something w/someone else's hours on it.
