Stereo Subs question

So have you guys run free air subs mounted down below the rear seat? How did they sound? How much power did you put to them? I've always done sealed boxes in cars, never done a fre air application and am worried about not have a good thumping bass with free air.

whoya 08-10-2008 08:44 PM

I put 4 - 10" subs in my back seat. I fiberglassed a board down the middle/inside to take some space out to meet sub specs. They are not totally sealed due to my seat can still come off and back side is still a storage area.
I have a Memphis 1100 class d running them. I think it would sounda little better in a car but they still thump.

US1 Fountain 08-10-2008 08:48 PM

I have 2 free air 10 subs mounted along the sides. No hard hitting thumping there. More of a rumble.

Wildman_grafix 08-10-2008 08:56 PM

It depends on the sub. If they are designed as free air they will work fine. (Our free air subs are mounted in car decks)

It is like anything if it is designed for it it works well, I have been doing some studies with boxless subs.

Do you have the Teil/small specs on the subs?

niceguy 08-10-2008 09:10 PM

I was looking at the Alpine SWR-M100 10" subs... designed for free air apps. I have a 900w amp that I want to run two subs and these will take 300w rms. I can turn the gain down on the amp, so power will not be an issue.

I just bought a pair of them, but have not installed them yet. They are rated for more watts than any other free air, so hopefully they sound good.

I just bought the same Alpine sub. I installed one & it's all I need. I also installed an Alpine amp but forget the specs. The amp was around $400 alone. Check out a shop on ebay called "yougotadeal". The sub was $100 less than anywhere on the internet & I received it in two days. Let me know if you need more info on them.

Thats good to hear. I'm gonna put about 250 watts a piece to them through a pdx amp. I got mine off ebay as well for about $250 for the pair.

niceguy 08-11-2008 07:47 AM

Thanks guys, I didnt even think about ebay. Well then I am gonna give them a shot. I'll update the board once I get them installed.

If you get the calculations correct on a free air sub, they will be just as affective as a port or sealed box

Perfectmix 08-11-2008 08:01 AM

I'm using 2 10' Kicker Free Airs under my bench and they are great. I'm rumming a Kicker 400w 2 channel amp. Hope this helps.

beamog 08-11-2008 10:09 AM

I got 2 of the newest Alpine marine free airs under my rear seat. Got the mono channel pdx amp, rated at 600w, actual test was about 680w. They pound.... with the seat off, not as hard, but put the seat on the the entire boat shakes. can hear and feel them even at WOT. Not to mention the ladies LOVE them.

JL AUDIO 10's are the BEST you can get. I had 4 under the back seat free air and sounded great!!!! you will not be disappointed.

BZ 08-11-2008 09:08 PM

JL is the best have 2 in my boat.

aphillip 08-11-2008 09:49 PM

jl audio is the best subs out w3 or w7

nascar_crazy 08-12-2008 01:30 AM

Take it from someone that was in this business for 15 years. Free air sub will never compare to sub in a sealed or ported box. JL Audio is the best bang for the buck.

hp500efi 08-12-2008 06:59 AM

I have a 12" Alumapro in a ported box powered by a JL Audio 500/1 amp and that thing pounds. Ported boxes in a open boat are key.

I agree JL's are the best. I've been doing stereo stuff in my own cars for 15+ years also. But I have never done a free air application or a boat.

I have all JL stuff in my cars, but to say that the marine JL stuff is a better bang for the buck than the new marine Alpine stuff, just isnt correct. They handle the same power, but cost twice as much. I'm not looking for competion quality sound on the boat.... hell with the dry exhaust at speed, you cant hardly hear the tunes anyway!!!

I agree, the free airs will not compare to a sealed box, but The free airs in my boat are not going take any space. They are going into a hollow unused area.

As far as bang for the buck. I'm pretty sure the 2 Alpine 10's are gonna sound better than 1 JL 10 would. The cost for 2 Alpines and 1 JL is the same. Alpines are rated at 300watts rms/900peak. JL's rated at 150watts rms/300peak.

shoregasm 08-12-2008 01:56 PM

I have JL 10" (2) under rear seat of top gun....not good sound without box.....

SC404COUPE 08-12-2008 04:51 PM

JL just came out with a new marine sub that is designed for a small sealed enclosure (0.5 cu.ft). Which makes it easier to fit 4 under the back seat. The key to making them boom is to fire them downward.

Griff 11-08-2008 11:26 PM

Finally got around to installing my 10" Alpine Marine Subs and putting some power to them. I'm putting about 250 rms watts of power to them through a PDX amp. They sound very good. I don't have a direct comparison with JL's, but I'm pretty happy with the Alpines at half the price of the JL's.

Dean Ferry 11-09-2008 05:37 AM

Yep,
Got 2 12" JL subs in the base of the back seat, and they will THUMP the boat!:drink:

Powerquest230 11-09-2008 02:41 PM

Has anyone ever tried the Bazooka Marine Tubes? I just picked up one of their 10" subs on Ubid.com for about $150.00. Figured I can slide it under the back seat- or are they even worth messing with..

Back when I was in the audio industry we put 12 of the 10" bazooka tubes in a bow rider and it rocked. It's a good sub and easy to hide and sounds pretty good for what it is.

sleek1 11-09-2008 06:46 PM

My boat came with two Bazooka 10"s. They sound decent, but I wouldn't rave about them. I'm a JL fan.

Dumb question on this topic - are the JL M650 components? As in the mid and high are seperated?

Also, what do we think would sound better, two of the Alpine 10's with the M4.100 or one JL 10 with the M1700? Seems to be about the same price.

So you can only get the true components in the 7.7"? Anyone have any experience in putting these in the 6.5" space (the mid)? Looking to have a set of components replace my front factory 6.5" and mount the tweeter as high as I can.

KajunATVer 12-05-2008 03:16 PM

I'm going to put 2 10" subs under the bench seat of my boat and was looking at the JL Audio 10" marine free airs. They are pretty pricey. How do they compare to other free air subs? I have 2 JL 10s in my truck and they sound great. Thanks
