If you leave the standard 6' antenna up when you back into the garage it becomes much shorter. Then wrap the splintered end in duct tape. I think that is how the race teams set theirs up.
Anybody want a brand new 6' antenna. It came with the boat and I don't need it. I think they go for ~$25 at West. Make me an offer! I also have an old one that came with another boat. Don't need that one either. Maybe I can let my buddy borrow it and we can joust or something. Use some trashcan lids for shields and go for it.

I had the 10" antenna for a couple of years. It is advertised as an emergency antenna. It worked fine, but the suction cup dried up and cracked. I could hear alot farther than I could talk with it thou. Range was very short for me. Maybe a mile or so. Terrain is the deciding factor.

doug,
If you have a Boater's World store near you, they carry'em and they are cheaper than West Marine . If you order from their website or the catalog, they don't charge tax or shipping. Just bought a new ICOM M127 VHF radio from them, saved about 50 bucks compared to West Marine price.
