280* pan temp is probably 230-250 temp after the cooler(depending on size cooler) where many measure their temp.

That sounds like part of your problem. That oil sounds too light to me. What kinda motors are they again? I think I would recommend a 20w-50 or 15w-50. I would recommend the AMSOIL Dominator 15w-50.

I agree with everything said, but particularly PatriYachts comment on checking jetting in the carbs. Amazing the impact lean calibration has on oil temps. For me with flat tappet cams I run Rotella T 15-40 and have had good luck for 4 seasons. It's a lot less expensive than sythetic as well.

As far as 20psi hot after a hard run and idling in gear, no problem. As long as you are 50-60psi WOT.
