A speedboat flipped over after an apparent collision during the "Battle on the Bay" race in the waters of Great South Bay off Patchogue on Sunday afternoon, several witnesses said.
Several people were badly injured in the crash, which occurred about 5 p.m. due south of Howell Point, according to early reports from witnesses.
Emergency officials were on the scene at and near Shorefront Park in the Village of Patchogue.
Authorities declined to release any information about the crash.
Witness Carol Rohde of Patchogue and other witnesses said it was difficult to tell what happened because the accident occurred well offshore in the bay.
"Bango, the race stopped," Rohde said. "We watched, and all of a sudden a police boat or something comes running onto the dock with obviously a patient on board."
Rohde said at least one person was taken from the scene by ambulance.
The race -- a weekend-long event held in the bay between Patchogue and Fire Island -- was wrapping up with a full day of races Sunday. Nearly 50 speedboats were taking to the waves during the event, sponsored by Great South Bay racing Inc, OPA Racing and the Village of Patchogue.
"All I saw was a huge spray of water," said Frank Buckley, 58, of Oceanside.
Witnesses said the speedboat may have collided with a water scooter.
