MerCruiser 900 SC, how are they really??

Hi guys,

I am looking at a boat with triple 2001 MY Merc 900 SCs.... How are they in performance, reliability, idling, etc etc. (What to look for?). Anyone with experience with those engines?

Thank you for all input!

The merc 900's and 1000's were great reliable motors. The lee intercoolers were the weak link. Assuming they were replaced with either aluminum or cupra nickel your good to go.Mine idle great and shift well.

I had a pair of 900's. liked them however they liked head gaskets.

keep the intercoolers flushed and also keep the valves adjusted every 10 hours or so. nice motors, top of the line parts

They were rated at 50 hour motors by Mercury[top end]Cometic head gaskets and .904 roller lifters would help longevity.

Thanks, what about consumption when compared with the new 850/1075s?? Can they run for let's say an houre on idel without fouling the spark plugs?

OSO is so great
