Any advice on preventing boat theft when docked at hotel overnight?

Insurance may or may not cover you. My poilcy with Markel states you are not coverd unless the boat is locked in a secuire area. I was told they a lot of stolen parts issues in parking lots.

I leave the boat in the water at hotels several times per year. I typically take keys and electronics out that are easy and put a cable thru the dock cleat and the boat. Sure , they could just unbolt it and drive away but slows the guy up just bit and I figure sometimes that is all it takes. I have a friend that was staying on Lake Lanier and somebody untied the boat and just sorta shoved it across the finger and he had to go swim for it. Like any theft though, if they want it, they will get it, you can just slow the lazy ones down.

Guys I've got a class reunion next weekend at a local lakefront hotel that has boat parking. I've never left my boat in the water overnight while I was sleeping. I'm worried about it being gone in the morning. Is there anything that helps keep boats where you leave them? Should I padlock it with a big chain or what. It's a 18' VIP.
