What stereo is your boat??

I'm going to install a new stereo in my boat. I want one that will work with a wired remote if possible. What's in your boat and how do you like it?

Evil Twin 03-05-2002 09:59 PM

Good Question, maby we can get audiofn to answer this one.

Boating Fool 03-05-2002 10:09 PM

Running an all Sony system. Sony CD head unit with 10 disc changer. 4 Sony Xplode 6x9s. Two in cuddy, Two on gunwale. Two Sony 12 subs under the rear bench. A 300 watt amp pushing the subs. Last, two remotes. One for the driver and one located on the swim deck.

Waterfoul 03-05-2002 10:13 PM

I'm running a Kenwood CD deck with a wireless remote. I put a small piece of velcro on the back of it, and a corresponding small piece on the dash. I tell everyone that if it's not in your hand, its on the velcro. You lose it you buy a new one. Thems the rules!!!

Two JL Audio 10" subs, two 6x9's, two 5 1/4". Couple of amps. Not earth shaking, but it does the job.

DONZIMAN2 03-05-2002 10:25 PM

I have the Sony stuff in mine with remote and Sub. Bill R does a lot of the stereo work for our club here in VA BCH. I will shoot him this link. DMAN2

GameOver 03-05-2002 10:41 PM

Kenwood eXcelon deck
4x6.5 eXcelcon speakers
Rockford Rosgate Punch 600.4 75x4
Wimpy setup, inaudible at anything higher than idle.

However, a buddie who works at Harmen International - they own Harmen Kardon, JBL, Infinity - recently hooked my up with the following:

1 - Kappa 692Marine 6x9
2 - Kappa 62Marine 6.5
2 - Kappa Perfect 10.1d Dual Coil 10" sub
2 - Kappa 62.3l 6.5
2 - Kappa 693.3l 6x9

1 - JBL BP600.1 sub amp
2 - JBL P80.4 4-channel
1 - P180.2 2-channel

Have yet to figure out how to mount everything.

Wellby 03-05-2002 10:44 PM

I have used quite a few pioneer, panasonic(w/wireless remotes), clarion w/wired. not much sony or jensen. sound quality of pioneer & panasonic good. it all depends on where you mount the head unit as far as wired or wireless remote. most boats I do stay inside when not in use, that could make a difference on what headunit to use, whether being trully marine or not.

Luxy60 03-05-2002 10:49 PM

Last season installed a Clarion XMD1 CD deck with a 4-channel Clarion amp, CM2502 Sub, added 2 coax speakers to the two already in the cockpit and hooked it all up to a Clarion remote on the helm.

System sounds great. CD doesn't skip. So far, very happy with the Clarion components.

Wellby 03-05-2002 10:50 PM

hey Game over, thats why they make velcro & duct tape!:D :D thats pretty good stuff. good luck. it should sound good

Hot Boat 03-05-2002 10:51 PM

packinair 03-05-2002 11:03 PM

I spent an hour on the phone with kenwood today trying to put to bed my 6 month nightmaier. I have thier newest lates greatest indash. it is white with a flip down face. well month 1=cd quit working month3=thing is dead, so I send it in... "it is MOISTURE(not water) resistant. " So I said I am just Fuc*ed? looks like it
So I will be recomending that everyone stay away from them. WILL NOT BACK THEIR WARRENTY. I will be adding all Clarion

Sunsation 32 03-05-2002 11:15 PM

I have a Sony CD w/wireless remote 4 6x9's, 2 tweeters in the dash and 2 12" Subs all are Audiobahn. Its powered by a huge fan cooled Audiobahn amp. It has a real good sound and the subs hit really hard, they dont drown out everything else though. My subs are made out of aluminum instead of paper. I've been out of touch with the stereo world for about four years and this new stereo shop in town sold me on this stuff and I really like it.

Audiofn 03-06-2002 12:28 AM

Definatly go wit the Clarion Marine head unit. Not only does it sound real good but you can dump 40 gallons of water on the face and it will be ok!!!! It is the ONLY TRUE built for boats radio. They did not just paint this thing white and call it marine.

They also have a wired remote that is kick ass. You can wire two of them off it if you want and have totall control. Put the thing on the swim platform if you want it will be fine :D:D

Jon

Audiofn 03-06-2002 12:29 AM

Anybody have any expereicne with JBL. I was looking the other day and they showed me a new JBL unit with wired remote.

FWK 03-06-2002 08:08 AM

I like the sony equipment but I sent in my dealer agreement for clarion marine. I am not happy with my sony distributor so you have to change after 18 years. I can not answer on the JBL but I will ask. Forrest
Jon I have toi tell you what I did to one of the big retailers yesterday.

where could i get a mobile infrared repeater from? i can only find ones for home stereo. anyone?

Andy Buzz 03-06-2002 09:47 PM

I can get you a deal on Clarion marine, infrared repeaters, many different amplifiers and speakers. Feel free to call (813)882-8477. My company stocks just about anything you may want for your marine, car or home audio needs.

FWK 03-07-2002 07:54 AM

Ir repeaters or normally 12 volt power supplies so they will work in your boat. Forrest

skatermike24 03-07-2002 08:10 AM

No radio in my boat, hard to hear it at 100!!!!!:D

BAJA WILL 03-07-2002 11:45 AM

Any of you all using capacitors on you boat tunes?? Do you think they would help with only using one battery? Looking at buying a used one 1 Farad for about $40:rolleyes:

WILL

Joe Krumske 03-07-2002 05:01 PM

Here goes.
Kenwood head unit with 10 disk cd changer
2 Alpine MRV 1505's hooked up to four 10" JLAUDIO subs.
Alpine MRV F350 hooked to four alpine 6x9's
Alpine F-250 hooked into four 5-1/2 Alpine mids.
IT ROCKS. You WOULD hear this thing at 100mph. Now all I have to do is get a boat that goes that fast. HEHE!!!!

ssherman 03-07-2002 07:09 PM

FWK (forrest) has just designed a system that he has described as retarted and assures me clarity and DB at 60 mph wont be a problem. I dont know much but I feel confident in his abilities and am looking forward to hearing this thing rock. Forrest or FWK would be a better source to let you know what i will have in the boat.

liquid asset 03-07-2002 07:28 PM

The new big clarion marine cd head unit, 2- mb quart 6.5'', 24 clarion 6.5'', 2 punch 10's, a 2 channel pheonix gold amp 0n my subs, and a 4 channel alpine on my mids&tweets

Shooter 03-07-2002 07:31 PM

Yeah man,

Just got my marine bazooka tube (amplified) delivered today. Not the highest quality but got a Seaworthy CD/Tape EQ with a 10CD changer, 4 Jensen marine 6x9s, and 2 clarion 5 1/4s. Driven by about 400 watts.

Makes me happy, just skips like a ***** in the chop... like to hook up my MP3 if possible...

Andy Buzz 03-08-2002 12:48 AM

About the capacitor, they make a big difference to your amplifier. Most boaters use their sound system when idle or with engine off. The better your electrical the tighter the bass and the longer the amp lasts as dipping to low voltage blows amps.

As far as buying a used cap, that may not be a good idea. When buying a cap, the higher the voltage the better. Some are 16 volt caps with 20 volt peaks. The better are 20 volt with 24 volt peaks. Also bear in mind that a used cap can be internally dried out and useless.

I sell to OSO members 1.0 farad 20/24 with digital voltage display caps new for $85.00.

FWK 03-08-2002 06:57 AM

Thanks SSherman. You have made it really tough sweariing me to secrecy on the paint job. People are asking questions. Forrest

Vyper340 03-08-2002 07:44 AM

It's all about the 8 track. I heard it's making a comeback!:D

Shooter 03-08-2002 10:37 AM

Now I have to find a home for the Bazooka tube. Can this be put in the engine compartment or will the heat hurt it?

ssherman 03-08-2002 11:05 AM

So FWK can you post what we are putting in?? or will that be top secret as well? Did you already take the wite to CMC?

FWK 03-09-2002 05:36 AM

Top secret Shane. I was waiting for you to tell me what we were doing . If it is the AT or a new toy. I will say you have given some hints though. I will call you saturday/ Forrest
