Whats the Difference ?? LED vs Neon in the Bilge

1 Attachment(s)
I am looking for some neon/led lights for my engine compartment. I did a search here and saw a few threads on it ,
but there's no definitive answer. Ive seen the Sunsation F4's they look like they have a bright kit in them.
One thread suggested Street Glow name brand.

Trying to decide on length and the led or neon in blue. Thanks for any suggestions:ernaehrung004:

Blue Neon tube kit
MODEL: AN100NB
MSRP: $169.99
two 48" tubes and two 30" tubes encapsulated in high-impact resistant plastic tubing with the benefit of a
built-in transformer in each tube and a central distribution block.

Blue LED kit
MODEL: ANLED100NB
MSRP: $159.99
two 48" tubes, two 30" tubes and one digital control module

Would they light up my motors at night enough, mounting under the side and end panels?

LED light are much more durable and less likely to rupture. Not to mention LED lights last longer. I would go with LED's for sure, but just my 2 cents............

The LED is the way to go. Less power draw than neon and longer lasting. You could leave the LED's on for a week and still be able to start your boat.

You got any pics of the cockpit/bilge with the lights on? I've always liked that touch at the docks....looks sharp!!

Big Time 09-12-2008 03:14 PM

Oh, and I would go with the blue lights....i think that would compliment your boat/engine compartment better with the paint you have

C_Spray 09-12-2008 03:17 PM

LED's are the bomb!

This is four 48" brite white LED strips; one front, rear, port, and starboard, facing in and down at a 45 degree angle. Each strip has just six LED's, and no lenses. At night, you need sunglasses to look in here.

I thought about the strips to.. Easier to install but you can't focus them where you want them. I got smaller LED lights and I was able to direct them right on the chrome and areas in the cockpit I wanted highlighted. I used mostly blue with a few yellow. THe "directional" LED's are brighter.. they dont spread the light s much as the strips but, I didn't wanted a bright bilge or cockpit area more a suddle, focused accents on the chrome and on my white interior. Stay with the smaller LED.s (my .02) You want a bright motor housing. ?? put in a flood light.. :evilb:

Mbam 09-12-2008 05:45 PM

Spray, what did you use? Supplier? Very nice.

Strip Poker 388 09-15-2008 12:08 PM

is the LED more of a directional type light over a glowing type light?

Those are Truck-Lite brand cargo strips. Outrageously overpriced if you buy them through normal channels. I came across them as uber-cheap surplus.

Airpacker 09-15-2008 12:58 PM

check out west marine. They have a pretty decent selection of led lighting

zitoracing 09-15-2008 02:28 PM

Rob try this place I have these in my boat.

C_Spray 09-15-2008 03:12 PM

Interesting. I bought some LED conversion bulbs from "SuperBriteLEDs.com", which turns out to be the same company. Great products, great prices, fast shipping, and VERY helpful on the phone.

I couldnt find any of the strips on there?

waterboy222 09-15-2008 08:58 PM

FYI, i installed yellow LEDS under my bolsters, throughout the cockpit and in the motor compartment. For some reason, i never got the "glowing" effect. They are like miniature spotlights trained on a small circle about 3" around.. It sucks, provides no light for the area I wanted to light up.. I think they have to be turned "sideways" when they are installed instead of pointing straight down.. just my experience..

Michael1 09-15-2008 11:31 PM

You'll get a more even light with neon compared to LEDs. It all depends on what you are looking for.

I used super bright on my Fountain.I used the string type in the engine compartment. There is a light every 6 inches on a strand with a 3m sticky type backing. They light the whole engine area up.The LED's don't use any watts to run compared to neon witch require alot of voltage to run.

aTX427 09-18-2008 09:57 PM

These guys have everything and they are cheap.

Neon also requires a transformer to be in line somewhere. They usually are safe but they don't like to be beat around a whole lot. They can get very hot when they start to go out...I've seen a car burn up with them. Stick with LED's it's the way everything is going.

I talked to Sunsation today ,they said there using super bright LEDs also,Said they had trouble with the neon not holding up.Ill try searching for some there:D

hunster 09-23-2008 08:46 PM

Neon is way too fragile. Maybe ok for a show boat that never hits the water. Go led. I use these http://www.varad.com/v4/products/ucl.php# 4 tube solid kits are 120.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions and help.I bought this multi color kit,Street glow wasn't making solid colors anymore and the cheaper line they had had less bulbs, over half, this kit has 360 LEDs,I have to play around with the positions of the tubes trying to get more blue on top of the blowers and the center of both motors.Heres a pick at night,no flash, kinda grainy pick.

Thanks,Rob:ernaehrung004:

Next project is mirrors on the bottom of the hatch!!!

As soon as you get the mirrors on, you'll get plenty of relected light on top of the engines. I had planned to put lights on the bottom of my hatch, but once I saw the results of the strip lights being reflected, I'm not so sure that I need them.

Looks good. How many colors can the kit generate?

Jigsaw89 10-10-2008 09:59 PM

Looks Great... mirrors would put it over the top!!

PhantomChaos 10-11-2008 02:14 AM

Sweet!!!!!!!

whoya 10-11-2008 07:41 AM

Let us know how they hold up.
I put some on my boat(not that brand) and some sections went out in each tube. They were like the 3 million ufo color ones. Guess mine didnt like the pounding from the boat.

Thanks, I just need to figure out how to do the mirrors on the hatch.I dont have any good picks of a Hustler with them, its curved in the back.Thought about using 1/8-1/4 star board as a backing, dont know if it could be glued ,or if it will stick????

Rob, I just bought a bunch of these for my truck and boat. They are LED's and Stobes in one. No Power supply box needed. These are the coolest lights they have ever come out with!

.red is dark, blue.a blue/green,green,yellow,white,turquoise,coral, it does all that other crazy blinking stuff to.The kit was around 206.The controler box is pretty chep looking , but there all from overseas

Also the plastic tubes, it feels pretty tuff, I could bend it a little to get it under the transom inner lip.

Main thing for the mirrors is the day time,we very seldom are out at night, only one bar/restaurant on the lake, its 500 yards sfrom my slip:rolleyes:

Do you all think the mirror could be glued to star board and stay?

Jigsaw89 10-15-2008 03:17 PM

3M 5200 should do the trick.
