Shane,
That is a BEAUTIFUL RIG!!! I hope he drives the Tree-Huggers @ Lake Tahoe CRAZY with that water Rocket!! Does he get any hassle running that Skater on Lake Tahoe?
MD

Strike 03-08-2002 09:39 AM

Shane,

I don't think that is the original King Sting. Doesn't look like the one that was here back then. Maybe ask Jim.

GRH 03-08-2002 09:53 AM

The Original "King Sting" was a 30" Shadow Cat w/twin SB Chevy's.... Gale Banks Turbos w/Nitrous.... He smoked everyone so bad at the Lucky LasVegas Shootout that Bob Nordskog lobbied for rules changes to make the boat illegal the following year.... The West Coast guys got miffed when Big Jim blew them all away! Boat ran 168 at Lake X... according to the lettering on the back of the boat.... Jim doesn't take losing well!

GRH 03-08-2002 09:55 AM

Thats this boat that ran 168... not the Shadow... the Shadow ran a meger 120's.... BACK IN THE LATE 1980's!

Strike 03-08-2002 10:00 AM

120 in the late 80's was considered very fast! Seems to me the boat was lettered on the side a very large KING STING name. Was it black, red and yellow, or something like that?

GRH 03-08-2002 10:04 AM

STRIKE... you remember well... that boat blessed the Cover of POWERBOAT! I remember sitting in the middle of Lake George in my Stoker MODVP.... which ran well into the 90's... one fall day & having Jim D. make several runs 50-100' off my bow in that Shadow.... He's quite a character.... knows how to put togehter nice stuff... I did think that this current boat was a 30' skater though?

CigDaze 03-08-2002 10:11 AM

That is a stunning ride!!!!

cobra marty 03-08-2002 10:12 AM

That is quite a boat. Is that what it takes to go 100 at Tahoe? What is the elevation there?

Shane 03-08-2002 10:15 AM

This new Skater is the result of an interesting story. A few years back, Jim had a 28 Skater also named KING STING built and rigged it with triple 2.5's. He went to the 1000's Islands Poker Run and got SMOKED. He came home, got out of the truck, walked into Performance Marine, and said, "Boys, I've had a vision!" The result is one KICK ASS 32. It has custom exhaust and is incredibly quiet. The boat is home based on Lake George. He just took it to Tahoe for a paoker run a year or so ago. It is absolutely GORGEOUS!

GRH, did you see my post about HOOTERS under gatherings?

Shane

GRH 03-08-2002 10:19 AM

SHANE - I didn't see the Hooters post... Are you sure thats a 32? Tom DeNooyer told me it was a 30? Howard Arneson was the Smoker of the 28.... nothing to be embarrased about there.

Shane 03-08-2002 10:22 AM

GRH,

I know for SURE that it is a 32. Can you make it to HOOTERS?

GRH 03-08-2002 10:49 AM

Gotta make it!!!! Thats the Corp Tax deadline! Good day to PARTY!!

Niuhi 03-08-2002 11:10 AM

That's a sweet boat, but did you see the Lady Lori on that site. Now that's nice.

Link pls, I couldn't find it.

Shane 03-08-2002 01:06 PM

Lady Lori is a Hacker Craft that he bought from Tom Gentry's estate. It has MONSTER power and runs 90+! In fact, he blew the hard top right off it! It also has alligator skin interior.

MikeStar 03-08-2002 01:25 PM

Found it! Very nice! BTW, I loved Lori's FAQ and the "Deadbeats" section. Funny as hell...

Strike 03-08-2002 01:31 PM

GRH

Also seem to remember the other boat he brought in 86 was a 24' Yellow Skater.

Niuhi 03-08-2002 01:39 PM

Gotta agree, I started looking around the site at things like the FAQs, and their funnier than hell. :D

Shane 03-08-2002 01:43 PM

He used to havea 24 Skater that was black with yellow and orange called the Killer Bee. The guy that owns those boats are customers of the marina whose site you are visiting. They are really nice guys and have worked on many OSO members boats.

IRONMAN 03-08-2002 11:22 PM

Sorry GRH but I had to make one correction The orig King Sting 30' Shadow cat had 2 destroked big blocks to 372 cu in and ran 115 at lake mead in 1983. I had spet many hours back then working on that boat. We had some problems with the basic GM 396 block castings porosity and switched to a better 454 casting therefore increasing the displacement to 398 with the "Hank The Crank " custom short stroke crankshafts in 1984, still not much displacement by todays standards to get to 121 at elevation on lake mead. The nitrous circut was only for getting it on plane and as I remember it was locked out over 3500 rpm or when positive boost occured. It was a twin turbo intercooled setup from Gale Banks and I think the max boost was about 12lbs at 400'elevation with the waste gates closed if I remember corrctly. There is a great photo on page 26 of powerboat magazine nov/dec 1984. The IRONMAN

Strike 03-09-2002 08:39 AM

Yup, yup,

"Killer Bee", that was it, just had a brain fart on the colors. Boy am I starting to fell old. But it seems like yesterday, when you consider all the racing going on.
But when I was inducted in '72, now that was a long time ago, and back then 100 was fast!

cashmoney 03-09-2002 08:50 AM

Nice damaged boat section.Must be running pretty hard to do that to a boat , or it fell off the trailer at 80 mph.:)

otis311 03-10-2002 04:51 PM

Shane, have you ever had the chance to ride in that baby ?? Must be awesome. This boat has never been lettered up King Sting as his 28 was to my knowlege

Bob

btw, whats going on with the Albany area OSO gathering

Shane 03-10-2002 05:00 PM

Ironman,

So who are you? Where on the lake do you live? I live in Basin Bay. We need to get all Lake George OSO members together this summer!

OTIS311,

The name is on the engine scoops along with apicture and on the wind screen, and on the race hatch. Look at Performances web site and there are photos. I have not gone to the section for the gathering yet to see if anyone besides GRH replied. Are you in?

Shane

IRONMAN 03-11-2002 12:12 PM

I am in Pilot Knob sometimes but mainly reside just north of saratoga. Chris

skatermike24 03-11-2002 12:19 PM

I like the paint on it

GRH 03-11-2002 12:35 PM

IRONMAN.... I defer to your superior knowledge of those engines.. I recall that the nitrous was for planning only... do you remember what Jim did with his "backup Motor"? Seems to me he set up a 21' Challanger(SUPERBOAT) for his son Tom to use... that boat was also very, vary fast in those days... for a 21'.... DeNooyers know nice toys... no question about that...

IRONMAN 03-12-2002 10:08 AM

One of the 372 engines made it's way in to the 21 Shadow "The Sting" 750hp They definately know nice toys. Before the Shadow there was also a 28 cig with some exotic SBC's and an 18' flatbottom with a tunnel rammed 454"water Rat" I would guess that a 36 Skater will not be too far in the future after that one ran 180+ last year.
