I towed a 28' footer with 02 Z71, the tranny and engine did excellent. What I didn't really like was the soft rear suspension, althought that could be fixed with air bags.

Close. I have an '05 2500 4X4 with 8.1 and 4.10 gears. I'm pretty sure '05 was the last year of 2500's.

I just picked up an '04 Avalanche 2500 4x4 2 month's ago.
I was specifically looking for a 2500, and they aren't that easy to find,and when you do, they seem to go pretty quick.
I'd been searching for several months before I found what I was looking for.
I've got the 8100 in it and 4WD, I'm not sure on the gear Ratio but pretty sure it's the 4.10:1. Which makes me good for 12K.
If it's only the 3.73 ratio, I'm still at 10K - which is way plenty for my rig of a 24x7 Pantera.
I bought the truck thinking that I'm not sure what I'll need to tow next - it never hurts to have too much truck.

I do have to say, I absolutely love the truck.
And, compared to the newer ones, the body changed to something that doesn't look nearly as tough. It's become a soccer-mom truck in the last year or two. I parked next to a new one a week ago, and it just looked like a toy next to mine.

You are correct, 2500 3/4 ton option no longer available. Only options are 5.3L vs. 6.0L, 2wd vs. 4wd & 3.73 vs. 4.10 (not 4.11).

I've been towing my 30 Skater locally to the ramp (approx) 6 miles figuring if the boat weighed 6700lbs dry the boat & trailer might weigh 8500lbs. I was way off. I towed to a truck stop & dropped the boat & trailer on the scales, much to my surprise she weighed out @ 10,950 1/2 full of fuel. The auto leveling suspension is deceiving as I'm way over. Ordered a 6.0 gas 2500HD Crew Cab w/ 6spd auto w/ 3.73's.

I believe wheelbase & LT tires make the biggest towing difference from a weight handling standpoint. Tahoe has a pretty short WB, an Avalanche is equal to a Suburban (which is still available in a 3/4 ton).

I have an 08 Avalanche and an 02 2500 Duramax Crew Cab. The Avalanche is fine for close by flat ground towing, but I towed my 28 Advantage up to Lake Hartwell this spring and those rolling hills on I-26 just killed it. It was down shifting on every incline. It handled fine, but just no comparison to the 3/4 ton diesel when it comes to overall power. Also the 3/4 ton braking is far superior to the 1/2 ton brakes. Same trip with the diesel, and it never once came out of overdrive.

BAJA, you can get a 2wd z71 tahoe in 05 only. I guess it wasnt for offroad just more of an appearace package. But traditionally all z71's are 4wd. Just ended a career as a buyer for "the auto superstore"-tons of useless knowledge.

correction 05 and 06

Look at the build sticker in your glovebox.
Look for GT4 or GT5
GT4 = 3.73
GT5 = 4.10
