Sean Careton of V Star Marine Surveyors has done very good work for me and I would recommend him.

Ditto.
You need a NAMS or SAMS certified surveyor. All other certifications ABYC, ABC, EFG, etc... are bullsh*t. A NAMS or SAMS survyor has to pass very difficult tests to obtain and maintain their certification.
You can easily find a surveyor by location at:
namsglobal.org
www.marinesurvey.org
One of the best SAMS surveyors in NJ that I have used is:
Daniel Belson - Accredited Marine Surveyor Charter Member
Captain Daniel Belson
400 Spiral Drive
Brick, New Jersey 08724
732-899-0558 -O, 732-616-8244 -Mobile, 732-255-9299 -Fax
