Opinions on power for 27 Magnum
 

I've had the hots for a 27 magnum, flat deck, for years. I'm consdering a project boat, but not certan. What type and how much power will it take to run at least mid 70's? Considering twin O/Bs, twin stern drives, or single 5-600 hp stern drive. Opinions?

2 small blocks in that boat are the real deal...big blocks were too ass-end heavy. if i remember correctly, the twin 280's with TRS drives pushed it around 63-64. i was in a single big block once, the torque made it lean. put a solid 300-350 HP with bravo's and go have some fun! BEAUTIFUL BOAT!

I could get you a set of 377 Merc Scorpions with Bravo Ones at a great price. Typically 10-15 demo hours and all dynoed over 400 hp after they are redone by Innovation Marine. We had a bunch and are down to one now, but I could do another conversion and get you a pair. One may be almost enough. Let me know.

Thanks for the input....I won't be needing the power yet...don't have the boat yet....just thinking and planning ahead....would like to get by with a single big block, say 540 cubes, maybe 600 hp.........

Glenn....thats quite a difference in speed....is it the difference between weight of engine{s} and drag of two drives vs one? How does that 80 mph boat run...stable at that speed? If you could redo it, would you go with single or twins?

Aggravation, I had the good fortune to own a 27' sport back in the mid-late 70's. Screamin is right on the money about the speed. My boat had some LT1 type engines, never dynoed and it went right at 70 with TRS drives. My best buddy at the time had a 28 Cigarette (also a great boat) with a pair of 377's that were dynoed at 400 each, his boat went 80. There was also a 27 sedan floating around (excuse the pun) with a single 482. It was a dog. Always leaned over to the left. There was also a 28 Maltese with twin 330's, not fast and did not handle.

If you did one today with Bravo's it would run even better.

das boot, don't take this the wrong way but there must be something wrong with your set up. That boat went 63 or so with the stock 280's. I will say that the old style cleavers were the fastest, the Mirage props were 2-3 MPH slower on that boat when they first came out. Both my Mag and the 28 Cig were rigged with the drives on 28" centers and up to the rub rail, in fact we did some grinding to get them higher.

In any case, still one of my favorite boats.

Mbam....know of any unloved 27s sitting around over there needing restoration?

aGGRAVATION28 I AGREE IT SHOULD GO FASTER. i HAVE 270 DRIVES WITH NOSE CONES AND THREE SETS OF PROPS CLEVERS,hILL 3 BLADE,AND MIRAGE.i LOVE THE BOAT THE RIDE IS GREAT I JUST NEED TO GO 7MPH FASTER. a PERFECT SET UP WOULD BE A PAIR OF SPEED MASTERS.
