How fast you think that white 30 Phantom in the classifieds runs? I believe that was the twisted sticks boat. With a stock Merc 500/525 XR you guys think it will run 80?
The last 26 Velo I was in was a drivers boat. A lot of walkin! over 75 |
a 290 velocity with a real cabin and a 8'3'' beam and a 525 hp with run 83+ full of fuel and ready to spend a day out boating. Not stripped down with no cabin and no gas. My 280 ran 68 with a stock 365mag. with a 500hp they are over 80 and if set up right with the right prop you can drive them with one hand at 80 .

A friend of mine had a 27' Profile with a stock 454 mag that ran 70, took 4-5 footers with ease. Before he got rid of it he was talking about getting a 502 efi and was thinking that would put him in the 80's easy. That boat ran/handled awesome, wish I had the money to buy it a few years ago.
And yes, we were stupid and tubed off the back of it once at WFO! |
I was gonna say 260 velocity... but i'm biased ;)... powerboat magazine did a test of one with a full cabin and the H.O. 496 (425 hp) and they got 80 mph out of it. Mine is the 375 hp version and i've gotten 68.1 (gps) with three guys gas and cooler etc. It did take me some time to be comfortable with her at w.o.t. but now is no problem. When I was shopping I looked at a 27 fever with the same power train and was told it was a low to mid 60 mph boat at best. Plus no steps on the Velocity ...... Just my opinion based on what little knowledge I have...

Heres a very comprehensive list!

I want a single engine boat (V-bottom) 24' or greater that would make a good race boat as well. I'm looking for the fastest hull Hp for Hp. Yes, my project will be diesel but that has no effect on the question, I need to determine what hull I would start with? It doesn't have to be a boat currently in production, I would start with a used boat that runs great now so I have a baseline to work with. There are soooo many out there now Activator, Phantom, Fountain, etc, etc which is faster? Joe Gere Here's the most complete baseline Ive found to date. It will take a bit of work, but is way better than reading 20 years of 4-5 magazines. Sticking with the actual numbers and ignoring the "80% story 20% fact" postings on this site you can get a good feel for the spread between a mfgrs cats and v's as well as what they run with 2-3 types of mills. You will also be able to see the difference in straight hulls vs stepped hulls within the same vendors line of otherwise identical boats. What you'll find is that the spread between vendors hulls using the same HP is far less than the chin music would indicate. Uncle Dave LaveyCraft 2750 Ilmor 710 LaveyCraft 20.8 406 |

Magazines almost always have factory people on site for speed runs so as to insure that the magazine guy "knows how to get the best out of it" and to insure they arent getting ripped off as the emphasis on speed is a big draw in the sales department I'd love for someone else to actually post some different real data rather than opinions or complaining about the incompleteness of this data.
