You would Think they could dig out around the boat and then lift it with a Crane ?

No...the bottom was damaged and the entire lower section of the ship was full of silt. The boat would have weighed tons!

That would have taken one heck of a crane to lift, but the bottom was finished anyway!!! Why bother, it would never float again?
