FF to 2:30 for it to get really interesting.

Wow, had that same thing happen to me about 15yrs ago in a Baja Force 200 going about 50. Had it trimmed too high, launched, tripped, then landed and hooked hard. Mine just spun out and lucky I was the only one in the boat. I was doing a fly by so my buddy could take a picture. I never forgot it and only need to look at that picture to remind me of a lesson learned.

sommerfliesby 12-09-2008 05:59 AM

Sure makes me glad I have a boat that flies level.

True That!!!

Or more like why did it take so long:drink:

Been there ...... didn't do that though.... that's why I bought a Cat. Running a over powered short V-bottom doesn't take much to kick it sideways, even dropping of plane or hitting a rouge wave. Ask Articfriends ..Smitty

Jassman 12-09-2008 08:21 AM

That happened to me twice in 2000... on my Single Step top gun....at 50mph in not that bad of conditions. Traded it back into the IL dealer for a 42 Sonic...had enough of steps..at least until 03..:grinser010: Jeff

They need to attend The Tres Martin school.

SeeYouThere 12-09-2008 05:32 PM

How can you tell that it is too much trim?

I was wondering the same thing... And I'm not being a wise ass , it looked to me like it might not be enough trim ???

I'm quite green at driving, but it appeared that the boat was porpoising too much and the boat was jumping too high out of the water on a regular basis. Looked pretty loose to me. Let's see what the pros say. :party-smiley-004:

trc2 12-09-2008 06:56 PM

too much bow lift tuck the drive in to lower the nose

I think what they mean is:

Trim: the outdrive was to far up / out.

Tab: looks like none

BenPerfected 12-09-2008 07:18 PM

Overall I would say they were doing alright...just running hard in a small boat in some nice swells. They had on the right saftey equipment and got a little too close to the edge. Couple a days work, some $$ and they will be good to go...and maybe a few MPH slower :drink:

Pete280 12-09-2008 07:21 PM

looks like simply too fast in too small of a boat in weird ocean swells

BINGO !

Steve_H 12-09-2008 07:37 PM

Nothing wrong with doing a little flying but their angle of attack was a little too agressive and like BAJA WILL said, they had at least 2 warnings. Showing off for the camera....

live wire 12-09-2008 08:11 PM

So if the boat was equiped with tabs I'm thinking that running the down slightly would have corrected the boats tendencey to fly with the bow to high and would keep the bow from slamming down into the next wave causeing it to bow steer ??? Is this correct??

And then there was last spring in the CC. :party-smiley-004:

Turbojack 12-09-2008 08:21 PM

I bet Brad is going to start using this video as how not to trim.

Mentalpause 12-09-2008 08:36 PM

Watch the few times he gets his drive out of the water, he seems to have that jolt right or left when he re-enters. Makes me wonder if he kept his drive perfectly straight once it was out of the water, or whether he got caught turning it slightly which helps contribute to the hard port turn.

Dock Holiday 12-09-2008 08:52 PM

WOW that was nasty. That's why I like these forums so we can all learn and hopefully not make the same mistakes.

silverstang84 12-09-2008 09:48 PM

so what would be the verdict in this case? driver error? too much trim? running to hard? or all of the above?

Unfortunately I have too many videos of what not to do. Even worse is how hard it is to steer this industry and the participants to accept they must demonstrate true leadership for long term sustainability.

Accidents do not happen and speed is rarely if never the primary causal factor in any incident, it only dictates severity of consequence. This as most are easily recognizable and simple to correct. But if you dont speak latin, " vos cant agnosco latin!"

Further disturbing is how many of these incidents are shrugged off as accidents with the operators chalking it up to part of the experience.

Jack and Lucky thank you for the support and Safe Boating to all!

Hmm, that looked a little familiar. And I think that was the last thing I told Dolla before that guy went over next to us.

TexomaPowerboater 12-10-2008 08:59 AM

Good video.

What can be done to mitigate this problem? Was it just the angle of attack/waves? Too fast for too small a boat? Too much trim? No tabs?

Tabs would have helped but overtrimming was the culprit. Its a race so they were balls out but you cant win if you dont finish.......
