What do I really need to have to tow this thing?

you're right you can get away with less if need be but i hope those that do try to get away with less at least take the precautions to be safer out there! More distance and time for brakeing and slower cruising speeds.
You wont catch me doing 75-80mph down to FL pulling my old Scarab in anything less than a 2500 burban w/454 or my crewcab dually 454 4x4. Granted even those speeds for those trucks are a bit fast but atleast i know if something pops up in the road the truck is alot better off handling the situation with power and brakeing then a smaller truck!!

Sorry Guys, I'm the wrong to give driving advice I guess? Was only trying to offer my help. This crane wieghed 220,000lbs was 110 feet long, 28 feet wde and stood 26 feet tall. I did take it slow. I should have stated a disclaimer to my driving habits and skills.

I can also give you a cad image with details for the K&N kit and Redline Oil install.

K&N on the Toyota 2.4L? You think that will do anything at all? What's this about Redline oil install? I'm familiar with the oil.
What I need is a deeper first gear, and I'd keep on towing with this 'lil truck - first gear is truck-deep already, but still need more torque multiplication.... I need a deeper first gear ratio in the tranny, but do not think that such a thing exists.... If I changed the ring and pinion, I'd have to change it substantially to make first gear a lot deeper..... but this will fark-up my highway driving.....If this truck was 4WD, it would pull the boat up the ramp w/o a problem, even with only a 4-banger. Don't underestimate the little Jap under the hood!

Auction vehicles
I bought my 1996 Bronco here
http://www.ncstatesurplus.com/ssp/pu..._bid_dates.asp
There are some dirt cheap late model Ford and Chevy trucks....buyer beware obviously...maintenance is pretty good but the people driving them don't care. Look at the completed auctiond for price guidelines.
