My motor is apart!!! Down to the bare block.....here's what we found:

First, thanks to Crazyhorse and KAAMA, you two are COLOR=red]GREAT!!![/COLOR]

Piston #1 had a two piece top ring. Good?? NOT!!!! Rod bearing wasn't that great either. Wrist pin was stiff (didn't move with the rod well). #7 has a rust pit in the cylinder wall. 60 over should take care of that (motor is already 30 over). Guess we know where my oil was going, eh???

Overall, 7 wrist pins were stiff, one was blue in color (got hot), and only one worked at all well. Main bearings were iffy, all the rod bearings were iffy. The motor was iffy!!! Probably would not have made it thru the entire season (especially as much as I use my boat).

So, 60 over, new pistons (going about 8.5:1), new bearings, turn the crank, new dual plane intake manifold, and then re-assemble. Should give me quite a bit more power than I had last season. And no more 2 stroke big block!!!!

Tinkerboater, when can you come out and line bore the block with me????

obnoxus 03-13-2002 09:45 PM

Mike,

Didn't you just go through your motor last winter? What caused the problems? Better hurry ..,,,,, only a couple weeks left till boating season !!!

Dave F 03-13-2002 09:48 PM

.060+ is "iffy"

At least on a production block in a boat.

just be careful is all I'm sayin'

WF,
wouldn't it be cheaper for you to just buy a short block already done ?
454 shorts are pretty cheap, I can ask my friend Lenny how much he want for one. he has a bunch in stock.
Unless you can recon the rods , rehang the pistons, do the machine work on the block yourself it might be cheaper.
Just a suggestion.

Never mine , I just checked his website , he only had one 330 longblock in stock at the moment.
I know he has a couple of 525sc's , just imagine
the foul whinning across the water !!:D

thunderdan 03-13-2002 09:49 PM

Mike,

how many hours did you have on your motors? and what size motors are they?

Audiofn 03-13-2002 10:12 PM

Dude sorry you had all that crap wrong with it:( :( I second the new block deal. Sounds like you may be better off.

Jon

Tinkerer 03-13-2002 10:14 PM

WATERFOUL get any headwork done before you buy pistons so that you dont have to cut the heads to get the compression you want. I don't know what your finances are but you should consider full floating the rods and bronze bushing the small ends.

NO MORE SIEZED WRIST PINS and a few exztra HP also.....

ARE YOU GOING TO BE WORKING ON YOUR ENGINE ON SATURDAY???

jafo 03-13-2002 10:16 PM

Foul-
At least you found out what the problems were! Sounds like the Baja will spend a much healthier season.
I'm going to be spending a lot of time in Battle Creek the next couple of months- I'll have to come up to Holland again to see what you guys are building!
Jim

boot 03-13-2002 10:24 PM

Wow , It is .030 over now and you are going another .060 ?? THat is a lot ! I could be wrong but I don't think you can . Ask someone that knows for sure and have it sonic tested to check wall thickness. What I think I remember is even if you can get away with it ,the walls are so thin they don't disipate heat right ,can crack ,and runs hot . Just my .02 ! Cheaper to find out now . Good luck !

Cord 03-13-2002 10:33 PM

Na, I think he's .060 over total. And I'm sure WF is going to add up all of his costs and compare them to a remaned motor.

Tigger 03-14-2002 01:04 AM

hey mike,

if you need an extra hand get ahold of me

Crazyhorse 03-14-2002 09:41 AM

Big electric motor, golf cart batteries, solar panels on the deck, a tape of KAAMA's engines playing through the mega-watt stereo, it don't get no better than that. So what if ya can't keep it on plane before the batteries poop out? At least you're on the open water, wind blowing through your teeth,,,,naked women on the motor hatch,,,,

jr 03-14-2002 12:18 PM

Get the shorty. My engines were held together with bubble gum and bailing wire. When I pulled them apart I found the bores scored. The pistons tore up, a cracked crank, 1971 heads, a cam lobe worn round, bearing clearances you could drive a truck through. The only thing I kept was one crank, rods, and the blocks. They cost me a fortune to rebuild and I did all the assembly and porting myself. The machining alone would have paid for a new short block. The only reason I didn't buy two is because I was running Bowtie blocks. Check into it more before you jump into your rebuild.

Hey guys here are the motors in my new boat, I think they might work, Twin 7.3 turbo 330 hp diesels running a 21x26 " surface drive. What do ya think? Allen

MACDAD260 03-14-2002 09:32 PM

Hey Mike,

Good thing you found out now. Still time to get it fixed before good weather. My 502 will be ready in a week or so. Can't wait to get it in the boat and try it out. :D The motor I got had broken rings also and one detonated piston, one scored and one undersize. My engine guy is doing it right. Three like new used stock bore pistons, (JE of course) new upgraded rings and bearings, honed, line honed, rotating assembly balanced, upgraded head bolts, new oil pump, new lifters, new timing chain and gears. I did a bowl port job on the heads. The valves will be reground. The used engine had very few hours, now it will be better than new. I haven't got the bill yet, though.

See ya, Doug

Waterfoul 03-15-2002 06:48 PM

Cord is right. The motor will be a TOTAL of .060" over. Heads are already done (117.5 cc). Valve job (3 angle, valves ground, etc...). Going with new 8.5:1 pistons, full ring set, etc...

As I understand it, 60 over on a 454 is not that big a problem as long as you keep the oil cool and don't over heat it. I have a large oil cooler, and have never had a problem with over heating. I bought this motor used 3 years ago and have just tinkered with it since then. Prior to my buying this motor, it sat for at LEAST 3 seasons in a boat, in a shop. The rust in #7 is from that (in our best estimate). I stored it the last two winters in a heated garage (65+ at all times) with NO water in the motor.

Bear in mind I'm not paying to have the motor assembled. Crazyhorse and I are doing that. And the machine shop I'm using is reasonable (he's a freind of mine) and pretty well respected around here. Crazy is also using his "contacts" to help me out on the parts pricing. All told, I am doing this for MUCH less than buying a short block. And I get to get my hands dirty!!!

Crazyhorse 03-15-2002 07:08 PM

Jeez, Waterfoul kinda makes it sound like I know what I'm doing. Guess I've got him fooled too. Waterfoul, I'd like to check the cylinders/pistons tomorrow, as well as the main bearing bores. If you're available let me know.

26scarab 03-18-2002 04:32 PM

WF,
I can get you a 330 454 short block for $1500 bucks. Less if you have a core for him.
If you can do yours for less than that you defititly have friends in high places !:D

Chuck

Waterfoul 03-18-2002 08:47 PM

Chuck, friends in high places??? No, just Crazyhorse, and he hasn't been high is 20 years!!! LOL!!!!

Actually they whole project is setting me back about $1200 total. And over $800 of that is machine work.

Just as it has always been, and will always be:

It's not what you know, it's who you know.

I know people!!!!!!:D

26scarab 03-18-2002 09:15 PM

Hey that's cool , but just remember how much your time is worth and all the favors your burning up;)

I'd be concerned about the .060 over, just think ,one problem and the block is scrap.

I'd rather spend the extra $300 and get a stock bore or at the worst a little over.

Waterfoul 03-18-2002 09:19 PM

Chuck....I'm not building enough hp to really do any serious damage. Might end up with 400 if I'm lucky. Keep it cool.....keep the oil clean and cool.....no problems. Really, I'm not that worried about it.

Audiofn 03-18-2002 09:26 PM

Say like YODA

Oh YOU WILL BE :D:D

No idea just poped into my head and I felt the need to type it :D:D

flylevel 03-18-2002 09:29 PM

Mike:
Sounds like you are making progress, Are you going to need to store the boat longer?

Tinkerer 03-18-2002 09:34 PM

Hey this isn't burning up any favors - hell he owes me already. Hey if my engines don't need any work I can work on his and it doesn't cost me anything other than a few extra parts that I will never use anyway. I think the only thing I am going to do this year is install the IMCO shorties. HEY WATERFOUL DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT BRAVO DRIVES. J/K :D

Waterfoul 03-18-2002 09:36 PM

Flylevel....I should have all the parts in one place for assembly in the next three weeks. Middle of April I'll be looking to get my boat out of your way. I have a lot of work I need to do in the engine compartment too.

Hey Audio....... oh never mind.
