MTI questions for the dudes that own them

I have been looking to replace the current dinghy for the "Mut" and I have a couple questions regarding rigging an MTI.

First are the water pick ups for the engines underneath the rigs. like here on the Speed Racer super Cat lite?

And like here on G. Catstelet's Super Cat Light that has sold to Japan?

Anyone has a clue who makes these pick ups or should I just call Randy S.?

And what kind of props are you running, ratios, drives with what boat and power?

From my limited research I have:

NXT1 / 1.35:1 ratio drives / 38"-pitch five-blade models from Hering. 128 mph with Merc 700SCI from here
http://www.powerboatmag.com/mti-40-race-/-pleasure.html

And...
MTI 42 Super Cat
Mercury Racing HP1075SCi engines linked to No. 6 dry-sump drives with Hering 16 1/2" - 38"-pitch five-blade propellers. With that propulsion package, the catamaran reached 153.8 mph

http://www.powerboatmag.com/mti-42-super-cat.html

and...
MTI 44
Engine (2) Sterling 980
Propeller Hering five-blade 16 3/4" x 35"

http://www.powerboatmag.com/mti-44.html

and...
"1,300-horsepower Keith Eickert engines were “a little down” on power compared to when he’d last driven the boat, which was outfitted with Mercury Racing No. 6 drives with 1.25:1 gear ratios and 41"-pitch Mercury five-blade CNC propellers."
"174 mph on the “tattletale” GPS"

Thank you for all your help.

Very nice rigs, but what about a nice 46RR w/1075 and 6`s:drink:

Happy shopping

Lets see if I can get these right ......
1) Yes...the water pickups are in the bottom as your pics show....not sure who manufactures but Mike in parts at MTI will be able to help with this.
2) Props are huge....the right prop changed the ride of mine sooo much its really hard to imagine that small of a piece of metal compared to the overall size of the boat can do so much. Each boat and power combo will vary as well as drive types (mine are BPM shafts) Randy can set it up for your specific wants both speed and ride.

Good luck
Erik

The pickups are the same. The ratios are either 1:24 or 1:35. I am actually going to split the difference and go with a 1:29.

Those pick-ups are on most (maybe all) MTIs. Others use similar teardrop pickup in the bottom, but just a single tube, no plate.

Not all of them have pick ups like that. I think we got these adjustable ones from Teague.

Mti

I run Speed Racer -44

BPM Drives and pick ups are as you showed on the race boat. They are adjustable from inside the boat for depth.

Props, as earlier stated, vary by each rig. I am running 1,200 Ron Potter motors and using Mercury 16.5 X39 CNC. Also have set of Herrings but found after 6 prop changes the CNC's were the best for top end and mid range.

Previous power in the boat were 1,150 Sterlngs and they used 16.5 X36 Herring. Significantly too small for the 1,200's

Actually I'm running a 1:29 gear and the props in the test are forged 35X20X 16.75 (which RS loaned to me till mine were finished) but now I'm running 37X18X16.75. I personally liked the 20's better than 18's.

An MTI In the right hands is untouchable. Good choice.

could be innercooler pickup? I was told on the Bud boat it was a balast tank pick up.

Amen. Before we go changing props I will follow your advice in getting the setup CORRECT! It takes time along with trial as you guys have proven.

I would think its for the engine as it's adjustable to control water pressure.

MOST have the water pickup as shown, in the bottom, this is what randy prefers. You can raise and lower the tube and minimize any drag, and help control Pressure depending on your set up. That said, they have built some with the pickup on the transom, like what is on the Shocker picture.
As stated earlier, props are very important. This hull was designed with the Herring in mind, however the new Merc CNC's are designed to compete with the Herring. Merc has brought many sets to Randy to test and they seem to be working well. Good luck, and try to test as many different props as you can with different rakes. These boat tend to like alot of rake in my experience.:ernaehrung004:

So the bottom plate pickups are adjustable? How does this work?
