Fuel pumps

I am dumping my 7.4 MPI's and building 496's with edelbrock heads, eagle bottom ends, Crane 731/741, victor intakes, 950 carbs. Do I have a designated fuel pump for each motor or use a central pump for both? How do I know how much flow I need from the pump(s)?

One motor one pump. Plus add a fuel pressure gauge for each engine.:ernaehrung004:

I assumed that--how much flow do I need from each pump?

If you run 3\8 fuel lines at 6 or 7 psi life will be good.:ernaehrung004:

sorry maybe I wasn't clear---can I use Holley blues? Need bigger? What kind of GPH?

Jeff P31 01-28-2009 09:20 PM

I'm sure that holley blue's will work just fine with reg's.

I hadn't thought about it but could I use the pumps from the 7.4's?

You could, you would just need a regulator to keep it at 7 psi.

Holley blue pumps should be enough for what you are building. Just make sure you use a large filter/water seperator and 1/2" lines. Also, make sure the pickup in the tank is large enough. I have seen so many boats with a little piece of crap plastic pickup. No matter how big a pump you put, if the pickup is to small, it won't work. Do not assume the pickup is big enough. Take it out and have a look. I build my own from SS tubing and fittings. Here is a pic of a factory one in a Donzi and the replacement that I built.

that looks great! I will pull mine and check them. thank you

so that example would be 7 PSI ???

Here is a little info to help you to size a fuel pump.
horse power x.5#s = pounds of fuel per hour.
pounds per hour -: 60 = gallons per hour.
gph -: 6= gpm.

here is a example . 500hp x.5=250#s
250# -: 60= 4.16 gph
4.16gph -: 6=.69 gpm at what psi you want to run at.
if you have any questions I can help you with feel free to call we are a Sx-performance fuel pump dealer.

that's what I needed. I love the sx products--thanks ALOT!!

let me correct myself

fuel pump size.
typically at wide open throttle , full power, an engine requires 0.5 lbs of fuel per hp every hour.
a gallon of gas weights approximately 6.0 lbs.

exp. 500hp x .5=250lbs per hour
250lbs per hour-:- 6.0=41.66 gallons per hour
41.66gph -:- 60=.69 gpm
sorry for the confusion (bad day)
