Switzer Craft Boats?

I am looking at purchasing a 1990 SwitzerCraft SS240 Boat. However, I cannot find any information on these boats. All I can find is the "wing" style Switzers. This boat is a cigarette style with a 454 Stern drive in it. I even looked on NADA and they don't show any SwitzerCrafts made after 1988. Anyone know anything about these boats?

Thanks!

Try Lanier Marine Liquidators in Dawsonville Ga .They show that they have a 1990 for sale. Frank

Yup, I know them well, what do youwant to know??

We had a 1990 model, 454 385hp would run like 68 mph, but felt faster. Over all very well made boat would compare them to a Checkmate of similar year model. Great for lakes, shallow V so in rough 3' waves and bigger not so good.

For a boat of that age check the floor for rott and the seats, also check the stringers. Last one I saw sell was a 1990 model for around 20K about a year ago. In todays market, 10-15K.

Frank,
Lanier marine is the boat I am looking at. They are basically a scrap yard for used boat and have no idea about this boat.

Will,
Why does NADA not show a 1990 Switzer Craft? I heard that Baja bought them out in the late 80's but not sure. I was just trying to get a book value on it. Also there are no markings on it that I can find, no huill number and not make or model labels. So I am not even sure what this boat is...all I can go by is how it is being advertised.

If you can demo and drive it to make sure it runs, that is a deal. Especially if the trailer come with it?? I man honestly my last Waverunner cost more!!!!! than what they are asking??

I've got a 1990 Switzer. 454mag 385hp. Like Baja Will said not a bad boat although I've only been 62-63 GPS. Been very reliable with that power. Boat tends to slide when cornering at speed. Only like 21 degree deadrise. Look for blisters on the hull bottom. Heard people speak of that. Mine doesn't have that problem. Also I did a value check for mine on myboatus and it came back at $13,000.00+/- without trailer in my area of NJ. Goodluck.

I brought it back to cincinnati ,ohio and put in a fresh 540 , 600hp . it ran fantastic , mid 80s with 26 hydomotive . bough it for $10k sold it 1.5 years later $20k I had $16k in the boat. :ernaehrung004:

A guy I know has one on Candlewood Lake in CT. Nice looking boat. Definitely not a "me too" boat, which always earns points in my book.

They want $8500 WITHOUT the trailer....the motor is in pieces, the head are off. The interior needs repair, the gelcoat buffed....and so on. They want an extra $1500 for the trailer.

We had alot of them up here in central N.Y. Great river lake boat. Like was said before look very close at stringers transom and the bottom. They do have a history of alot of rot

Does your boast says Switzer on it somewhere? Is there a hull number on it? I can't find any markings on this boat.

Yeah the Vinyl interior says Switzer on it. It also has a fiberglass swim platform that has Switzer molded into it and the Hull number is on the right of the transom. SWT blah, blah ,blah. Sounds a little high priced. $8500.00 + $1500.00 for the trailer. Your up to 10k and still have to do a lot a work the way it sounds. I paid $13000.00 turn key in Aug. 2006 with the trailer in a much better economy, and drove the boat that day.

Thats a little different story then, too many good deals to be bickering over a boat that is in pieces.

Here are some good deals for 15-20K turn key ready to go, much newer boats also.

I agree, that is way to much money for one of those not in top condition. There are way better deals out there, I would walk on that one.

Yeah, This is what worries me. This boat has no markings. It has 2 teak swim decks on the back, and there is no Hull Number that I can find. I have asked the dealer for the number also and they cannot provide one. So I wonder it this actually what they say it is.
They also told me today, that Switzer was bought by Baja back in 1988 and that is why the NADA guide does not show any swtizers after 1987. Just seems weird that a boat builder would keep the old name of the boat 2 years after they supposedly bought the company.

tim brown 02-08-2009 07:36 PM

run don't walk . way too much

agood1 02-08-2009 07:41 PM

I'm thinking of making them a low ball offer, once I determine if it is what they say it is.....can someone that has seen one of these boats look at this link and see if it is a Switzer or Baja or whatever?
They have lowered the price a little, but still don't say the engine is torn apart.

To the best of my knowledge, that is a Switzer, if it has VA #'s I may know previous owner, who visited GA often with the boat., I think they switched from wood swim platforms to fiberglass in 1990.

If the motor is in pieces, just assume its junk, I would look at a newer boat turnkey for a few thousand more. I think you will discover when trying to save a thousand in a boat sometimes ends up costing three thousand in the long run.

agood1 02-09-2009 07:22 AM

It has Indiana registration numbers. Is has PURPLE RIVER painted on the back. I assume that was the name of the vessel.

cosmic12 02-09-2009 09:21 AM

That is a Switzer..... once again leave that one there. Why spend that kinda $$ on a boat that the mfg went outa bis years ago? There are so many good deals out there on boats that are still being produced and the with layup tech that is far beyond what they had in there best day. Also think of resale, there won't be much if any. Do some more shopping.

agood1 02-09-2009 09:29 AM

I plan on rebuilding the motor anyway. SO I am not really concerned with the engine. I just want to make sure the hull is sound. I have $10K to spend, so that limits me quite a bit. I would only offer them in the $5K range for the boat as it sits.

BowenCT 02-09-2009 10:50 PM

Definitely a Switzer. That hull is unmistakable. They look a lot better in the water than they do on the trailer.

Yes, but when I saw it, over a year ago, it had the motor all torn apart....looks in worse shape now.....cosmetically.

Former Switzer Gelcoater

Hi everyone! New to the forum, just kinda stumbled on it. I was a Gelcoater (painter) for Switzer (SCI) in the late 80's/early 90's. I LOVE the SS240, it was a GREAT boat! In fact I think it won am award for fastest production boat in the 24' class. Anyway one thing I remember is that there were issues during that period with the gelcoat. I thunk it was due to the mixers we were using to keep the 55 gal drums mixed (primarily the white). They were not going fast enough or something causing the gelcoat to stay a bit separated. This was nit womethig I was able to notice while spraying but I do rember it caused issues with some boats that went out. The problem was corrected but I think there were a few months that it was an issue. So maybe less than a dozen boats. The problem showed up as "bubbling" and "flaking" mostly in the chines where there tended to be more gel. I hope this helps and would love to hear more about the SS240! I have fond memories of building these bad boys! I also spent some time in other areas of the fresh water marine biz.
