Anyone using Deisels?

Anyone else out there running Diesels ? I know they use alot less fuel and run alot less rpms. I Bought a 34' boat with twin 7.3 turbo diesels with surface drives turning a 21x26 inch prop. I hope this setup will be dependable. A woman does not know how fast you are running, but She knows when you are broken down at the dock. Allen

moallen 03-16-2002 10:15 PM

Surface drives

It is a 34 ft vee hull . not a hot boat but will run 62mph and weights 13,500 lbs has Gen ,air, and a cabin . The drives are Simplicity out of Fla. They look alittle like these. Allen

Mark in So. MD 03-16-2002 10:51 PM

this cruiser was movin!!

Florida Powerboat club in their Winter 2002 news mag had this to say about the Key West 2000 Poker run.

Steve Lankfer and crew leads the pack across Biscayne Bay in our offical paceboat, Green Wing II, a 77mph diesel powered Hy-Lite 55' offshore cruiser.

Dont know any other details but maybe some one on here does.

My uncle is running a single volvo diesel in his 40ish Dorado. The power is split from the single engine to dual volvo duo props. The boat tops out around 35, but it has an incredibly smooth ride-even from the top of a 20' tall tuna tower. Man, those drives sure hook fast-you just drop it into gear and the boat starts to move. Very responsive.

moallen 03-17-2002 09:09 AM

Thanks for the input

Did I also say I have surface drives 21 x 26 props

FWK 03-17-2002 09:19 AM

Hi Allen what tyoe of boat is it I have a freind that is looking for a deisel powered sport boat also. Now for the stereo upgrades. (just kidding) Tell more about the boat. congratulations Forrest

yahoo 03-17-2002 09:48 AM

I always thought it would be cool, to buy a 36 skater. Put Yamar diesels in it, with 4 speed transmissions.

Once you got it dialed in I bet it would break 100mph no problem.

Curtis

You Lucky Dog!!!

I'd love to have a couple kerosene burners in my boat, but there isn't room for two 8.3 Cummins in the engine bay. I prefer inline 6 diesels such as the Cummins or Cat 3126B's, but pretty much any diesel is SUPERIOR to a gasser, and surface drives are less prone to breakdowns, plus I think they perform better in many applications. I can attest to the speed of the "Green Wing" I could barely take him with my much lighter gas powered Avenger, last year at the Smoke On The Water poker run.

How about posting some pics of the boat?

Ok ,so I will be banished from the web site; but, it is a Fast Sport Fisherman. Solid one inch thick hull. It also has a diesel generator, all fresh water cooled. 40mph at 1800 rpms... Allen

puder 03-17-2002 01:16 PM

as long as its fast and can handle snotty water its cool in my book :D

moallen 03-17-2002 01:28 PM

Cool

Well She is That, Fast, and handles the water great . I tested her in Miami, and took her about 100 miles out. Took the 3 and 4 ft waves great. I can't want to try Her at LOTO. Allen

boathead 03-17-2002 04:46 PM

Don't Apologize, It's a True Offshore!!!

Dude,
Don't make any apologies, a sportfisherman is a true offshore, they go out while all us sissies are at the dock! My dream boat is a Buddy Davis 50, I'd give all the go fasts in the world to have those big smelly Caterpillars and a fighting chair-OOOOOOOOHHHHHH Baby!

moallen 03-17-2002 04:59 PM

Thanks guys

I don't feel so bad for selling my Firehawk now, And hey I can take the little wife in the cabin, for some offshore drilling:) Allen

Boatlesss 03-17-2002 06:35 PM

Curtis, given the performance of the Arneson/Yanmar Package, which has performed faster than the 500EFI/Bravo Package, I'd bet that the 36' would easily break 100, if not 110 without the need for troublesome transmissions.

Fuel Mileage would be great also! Low Maintenance, 5 yr warranty on engine… hmmm…

Waterfoul 03-17-2002 06:45 PM

Cool!!! You will be the tallest boat at LOTO on Mem. Day. You get to fly the OSO banner!! LOL!!! Now, we just have to make an OSO banner....

I'll bet it has a big anchor too......nice place for us guys with small anchors (read: go fast boats who don't like the extra weight) to tie up!!!!!

See you at LOTO !! 66 days and counting!!!

yahoo 03-17-2002 06:57 PM

I would want to stay with the 6 drives, the multispeed trannies would help keep the motors in the torque range.

You would only need 1 prop, rough or smooth, just change gears.

Curtis

moallen 03-17-2002 07:35 PM

See you at LOTO

Yes I can't wait to het the Lake . I am going to Fla to pick the boat up next weekend. It will be a load to haul this far. I like all the room on the back (more people bigger party) See ya there...Allen

Waterfoul 03-17-2002 07:42 PM

Wait a minute here!!!!!

Dude, you're gonna change the name. Right??? WHEN you do this, make sure you follow the procedure to the letter!!!! Lutzparty can help you with it if you need...he did it to his boat already this year.

Toffen 03-17-2002 07:54 PM

Diesels - high speed?

Hi!

Check out Phantom 34 Classic with twin Yanmar 300HP = 69-70 mph top speed. Cruise all day long at 55 mph consuming 16 gallon per hour. Not bad! And you can tweek 50 HP extra per engine without probems running 74 mph .......

Average life per engine 15.000 hrs...

Cheers, Toffen G:rolleyes:

moallen 03-17-2002 09:44 PM

Motor hours

I talked to a guy that has the same motors that I have and he has over 5000 hrs and has not even touched the things. That is the way to go ......Allen

Boatlesss 03-17-2002 11:45 PM

The Mercury #6 is on the Way Too List:

· Way to Expensive
· Way to heavy
· Way to big for the Yanmar Package
· Way too much power loss

Just seems that the proven package that I see Fountain using seems to be a good system.

I've wondered about the single propeller theory. It seems that the European teams still had a large assortment of propellers even though they were using the multiple speed transmissions at the time.

Congrats,
Now you can hang out with the rest of us old farts in our slow boats. BTW, compared to mine, 40mph is smokin.
Gary

moallen 03-18-2002 10:27 AM

Saratoga

Wow Gary, is that the Saratoga? That is a nice boat !! So is that 40 searay with twin Cats. If I do some canges and taek some weight off my boat I will be able to Hit 65 MPH. That would be something to see huh:) Take care Allen

Gary Anderson 03-18-2002 04:26 PM

moallen
By LOTO standards, my boat's getting kind of small and it's way too slow. I think your lower back is going to appreciate your new ride over the cat. I'm sure your wife will appreciate the head, gen, AC, etc. It will look a lot less akward carrying that kayak with you too.
Gary

Hey Gary,
You are right about a better way to haul my kayak. Hey you have to admit it is a great way to see the partycove. I bet we had 20,000 taken of that cobra Kayak. See ya at the Lake Allen

delsol 03-18-2002 05:44 PM

The Green wing II was built about a mile from me , i think you're right about the 2 1400 hp cats. That thing is a monster, I watched them dunk it after they had to redo the trannies- it seems that a sandbar was misplaced. :p

When you get old, fat, and lazy like me you'll realize that kayak thing is WAY too much work. Try one of these for getting around the cove.
Gary

moallen 03-19-2002 05:33 PM

that might be fun

Well I do have one of those Aqua scooters. But you get wet:) Allen

Cord 03-19-2002 06:25 PM

hey moallen-Ain't that your wife?:p

moallen 03-19-2002 08:24 PM

My Is in Green

Kathleen Is in the green Suit , she is my Wife, the other girl had them repaired, and they look good now!!! Allen

Jeff 03-20-2002 02:49 AM

dude you need to check your speedo? there is no way that boat will do 62 except behind my Ford Super Duty on I-75. A good friend of mine owns the diesel Phantom here in town and it only runs a little over 62 with 32 pitch props. If it does the drug smuggler that built it should go into the boat business.

moallen 03-20-2002 04:13 AM

Folllow me and see

All the weight has been stripped off of it. but ok,how does 54.6 on gps sound. I am going to larger props but havr to take off the sand shoes.....Allen
