My new boat needs graphics...

I'm leaning towards vinyl. Anyone have any ideas?? The billet accessories (blower vents, gauge bezels, grab handle) are powder coated blue...so I'm going to use that as a base to match with. I was thinking of a blue flame job across the bow, fading into a ghost flame. Any thoughts??

Whatever you do you better hurry. I expect to see that sharp looking boat out on the lake next month. What did you get for the powerplant. We got out about a week ago last friday. The lake was nice n rough.

pullmytrigger 03-17-2002 11:13 AM

What kind of a boat is it? (make?) there is nothing listed in your profile.

packinair 03-17-2002 11:15 AM

call glassdave 419-666-7779, he did mine and several others. the vinal is alittle cheeper but you pay for what you get. my 2cents is flames on a boat are a no-no

hoghead 03-17-2002 11:32 AM

Boating Fool... I got it with a single HP500EFI.(Brand new with warranty) I was going to take it out this weekend, but the weather turned to crap. I've got some things to finish up on the boat. It is quite the way I like it just yet. I'm going to add an extreme marine tubular platform also. Hopefully it won't be a month before I take it out. Have they started raising the lake yet?

Twin99... it's a 1999 28' Prototype. Just picked it up two weeks ago. Brian Hollis is now making the boat under the name Joker Powerboats. Although, this boat was made by Phil Klein before Brian bought the company.

Pakinair...why are flames a no-no? Where is glassdave located? I'm in the KY Lake area.

hoghead 03-17-2002 11:35 AM

Boating Fool....great looking boat. When you guys headed out again? How fast that thing go? What power?

pullmytrigger 03-17-2002 11:53 AM

I admit I dont know a whole lot about Prototype boats but this I can say, just make sure you keep it in the graphic "family" of your make of boat, the WORST thing you can do is if you have , lets say a Formula and then put Cigarette (JUST an EXAMPLE guys!!) graphics on it. Seems obvious but people actually go around doing that, brutal. But thats out the window if you an "all boat" type of thing. Ive agonised over mine for months, Ive finally settled on a jazzed up but still recognisable version of a stock Fountain graphic scheme......Doug.

KN 03-17-2002 12:04 PM

Hey hoghead congratulations on your AWESOME new boat. I'd have agree with Pakinair about the flames they look good on west coat built cats but not on the classic offshore lines of your boat.

I know they do a great job vinyl, but it still doesn't look as good as a custom paint job. He may be to far away from you but Mitch Tolan in Middleville Michigan does amazing work.

Good Luck, Kirk

Boating Fool 03-17-2002 12:17 PM

Hoghead, Yep the lake is going up. This morning it was at 356.2. You can keep up with the level and what they are going to do at kentuckylake.com - lake conditions.

I will be down there more than likely this coming weekend. It looks like the weather is going to still be crap. Doubt we even pull the ranger out to do some fishing.

The boat has HP500 efi for power. How fast-don't know yet.:D Did a couple of short speed passes in big bear bay. Saw 82 on the speedo (non GPS), but never really opened it up for a good distance. Plus still learning where it wants to be trimmed. Still think their is a few mph left to get out of it.

hoghead 03-17-2002 02:33 PM

Twinn29, KN... I understand what you're getting at. The more I look at the boat, I kind of like the white out thing. I don't know what I'm going to do just yet. A few cleat and bow light bezels, along with the platform may be enough for me. I'll have to take a look when I get them on.

Boating Fool... I just drove up to the lake to atake a look. It still is a bit low although there were alot of fishing boats heading out. Send me an e-mail before the week is out if you head down here next weekend. I'd love to come look at that new boat in person. If the weather isn't too bad, I'll take mine out!!:D

Mark in So. MD 03-17-2002 03:08 PM

hoghead,

i know i am a while away but i do that kind of stuff for a living at my shop. We could always work some agangement like UPS(we had done that) and me delivering it(i have done that on the way to seeing a relative). We do all the computer/design work and print it out to let you see it and approve it. We dont really do whole boats, maybe a couple a year, but we do hundreds of names and reg. numbers.

Keep in mind(prob. why we dont really do a lot of whole boat graphics), the vinyl will be much cheaper but will natually not last as long. Unless you wax it often, really often or keep the boat out of the weather. We normally use Avery vinyl but have used others at the buyers request. We have many many different colors to chose from and can match basically anything. There is pretty much three different quality of Avery vinyl that we use.

A3 is what you call a 3 year vinyl
A5 5
A8 8

Me personally, i would save up for someone to airbrush it or leave it whited out. Hope this helps.

Tigerlily 03-17-2002 04:10 PM

I'm glad you had second thoughts about the flames. A blank canvas is pretty hard to resist, especially when you are on the water & it looks like EVERYBODY ELSE has some totally killer graphics on their toys.

BUT the other side of that is that I have sometimes not appreciated an amazing machine because their paint was so LOUD that it was all I could "hear".

Just keep in mind, sometimes more isn't better.... it's just MORE:)

I can see putting some type of graphic on it...but you also want to let your boat do some of the talking;)

Boating Fool 03-17-2002 05:01 PM

It looks like the weather will be clear and mid to upper 50s with Sunday the warmest. Dad won't put a boat in the water. Just checked lake level. Forecasting 357 on Tuesday. It oughta be close to 358 by the weekend. If that the case you wouldn't have to worry about where to put in. KY Dam, Moors and big bear would all work. Put in at Big Bear last week(only place we could) and was nervous about it with the water being down. I will shoot you an email by weeks end. If you go out maybe you can give me a ride. The weather doesn't bother me.

packinair 03-17-2002 05:46 PM

Hog: Dave is up here in Toledo. It would be a little bit of a drive but if you want it done 1st class he is the man. just ask tizbad on here. there is a post from a few weeks ago "my latest paint job, just someting I threw togeather" or something close that shows some of his work.. Just my opinion but you have a really nice boat might as well spend the extra money over vinal to keep up with the Jones. Good luck with whatever you decide

hoghead 03-17-2002 08:01 PM

packinair...I saw that post the other day...that guy does great work. Toledo is a bit of a drive for me.

The more I think about it, I like the all white. I may just add the powdercoated cleat and bow light bezels, along with the powdercoated swim platform and leave it at that. I've seen other "white-out" boats before, and they've always looked good to me. Sometimes minimalism is enough.;)

Thanks for everyone's input.:)

Boating Fool....I'll be waiting to hear from you...If I take the boat out, I'll be glad to take you for a ride.

glassdave 03-17-2002 09:09 PM

tell ya what hoghead . . . i think your right, its a good looking boat in white. that things got some real agressive looking lines. looks like it means buisness  heck at the very least you could spend a season with the boat in white, see how you like it . keep your eyes open for graphics on other boats to that you like and take pictures. it gives any potential graphics designer/painter somthing to go from (its some times tough to see in the owners head an makes developing a new graphic a little smoother) definetly a good looking boat though, man you gotta be looking forward to some seat time in that thing.

by the way will you be at cumberlands poker run in september. we will be there with a small armada of my work :D . we're bringing the ocean x from my last thread and packs alley cat along with a few others.

good luck, have fun

If you want Offshore graphics there is only one person you want to talk with. Ryan Beckley @ kinetic Animation. He dose phenomenal design and layout. Check out there web site http://www.kineticanimation.com/ I had him design the graphic for my Scarab. I do vinyl signs and lettering as a hobby but graphic design is not one of my specializes. Its best to have a pro design it for you. Ryan did all the design work and I did the tweaking, cutting and application. I just got finished applying the vinyl tonight and I still cant believe that it's the same boat. I will have some before and after photos in a few days. All I can do is show you a photo of what he designed all by via email. It came out even better than it looks on this photo. :D

Shane 03-18-2002 08:25 AM

I agree with Hot Boat. Ryan Beckley is THE MAN! Hot Boat's ride looks AWESOME! We spent about 10 hours on it yesterday and he is right, it does NOT look like the same boat! Ryan is a FANTASTIC individual and has helped me as well. If you want the best, you have to go to the best! http://www.kineticanimation.com is your FIRST and LAST STOP for graphic design and application!

Too Old,, It was still White, as of 3 weeks ago,, Man that thing flies!!!! It runs sweet in the water ,, no walk,, or Bounce!!!

I like understated graphics. Too much on a boat makes it look like a cartoon. Here's an AT that has similar lines to your boat.

I have never seen a Prototype, so I just did a search to see what they look like from the factory. The only one on boat trader is an example on how NOT to do one!

CustomRigger101 10-12-2002 07:59 AM

that one piece Cig is nice looking.. best thing they come out in years...

back to the color question.. i think some of the boats that are brake throw a checked flag and ripping it down the bow looks cool

THEJOKER 10-12-2002 09:45 PM

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Cuda:

Now tell me how you really feel about my boat! BH

glassdave 10-13-2002 12:11 AM

i hafta say i kinda like the graphics on that boat that cuda posted, the yellow/orange over white prototype. i think it looks good, although i prolly would have left the purple off . i believe it is one of eye candy's jobs. pretty cool.

jesse james- i gotta say you boat is way cool. i saw the full set of pics you posted a while ago. i am VERY impessed with your graphic guys work. its not often you see perfect symmetry at a level like that. does airpower have a website. i would like to see some more of their work.

I know they do a great job vinyl, but it still doesn't look as good as a custom paint job
Just finished this last week. It's all vinyl. This is what they ordered. I could have went much wilder. It's a take off of a Geographics design. But, like I said before, it's what the customer wanted. Workin on a deal with a Fountain owner. I think would be very surpised at what can be done with vinyl. If you are looking for some one to design the graphics, give me a call. I just got a call from Commander Boats last week. They are tired of copying eveyone elses graphics, so they want me to design stuff for their boats.

This is all vinyl. Pic doesn't do the colors justice ( I'm a graphics guy, not a photographer)......... Maybe I'll have some better ones afteer this weekend.

These are graphics on a Commander 2800 cat. It was sprayed in the mold. I wasn't to happy with the way the purple fade came out, but the design idea is still there. I designed them about 8 months ago for a friend.

Well, I went all out, spent $35 and put the flag graphics on.:D Seriously, I decided to run it all white this summer and possibly do something this winter. I get alot of people saying they like it all whited out. I also get alot of people wondering what the heck kind of boat it is. When I tell them it's a Prototype, they usually say "of what?" Honestly, I'm kind of partial to the white out. Overall, I've been extremely pleased with the boat...it runs great, handles rough water like a dream, and flies straight. I took it to LOTO over July 4th week and had NO problems, while my friends had a few things break due to rough water.

THEJOKER 10-13-2002 11:24 AM

HogHead:

Hey that's one cool boat. I drove your boat in TN in 2000 before I got Phil to build me one. I was used to a chine walking outta control 27 ft boat and I fell in love with the Prototype. In love so much I bought the company. I won the Islamorada race in 2000 in P-4 / 2nd in The Worlds and eventually 2nd in Daytona Factory 1 in 2001 in the 28. I'm glad to see someone else appreciates the awesome ride of the boat. The new name is JokerPowerBoats.com - like the name or not , that's what it is. I got so tired of people saying " Prototype ? Well call me when you build more than one" ! There's been 12 built so far and I have (2) for sale now (see Joker in Classifieds) Keep in touch and let me know if I can help you with anything. One thing I know that I can help you with - I built some foot rest inserts in the dash to give some room up front. I know your boat must be tight. I could ramble on forever better go.........................BH

hoghead 10-13-2002 03:32 PM

Jesse James - no problem. I think we're planning on heading back next July 4th. I'll give you a shout.

Brian H. - I spoke with you earlier this year about the boat and the foot rest inserts. I was trying to work a deal with you (remember? you wanted some pics of my cabin door with molded steps...) Anyhow, yes, it is a bit cramped. I would be interested in those...if the price is right. You wouldn't happen to have a tubular swim platform lying around to sell cheaply do you?

THEJOKER 10-13-2002 03:52 PM

Hoghead:

Yea I rememember you were looking at the 28 then. Glad to see it's doing well for you. We got the "trick door" finally figured out. We're getting ready to build another 28 for a guy in Miami and I'll go ahead and build you (2) inserts for the dash. I do not have any swim platforms lying around but I'm sure the power of OSO will respond. Happy Boating - BH
