Brian,
Not a bad idea, however on our Poontoon we have big fog lights on the front of it. I found that usually the mist/fog on water at night usually makes it harder to see in combination with the lights. Plus with more light on your boat it will be harder to see markers. SML markers are so dim sometimes I turn off my dash lights, and sometimes have to turn off my running lights (briefly) to see the markers. However the fog lights are great for docking
You may consider the night vision googles????
My experience and yes you do keep allot wax on your boat
