Marine Engines Over 2000 H.P.?

I am wondering if anyone has experience with, or knows of any WELL-KNOWN marine performance builders who have gotten 2000+ H.P. from an automotive based engine, be it turbocharged or supercharged?

I remember a few months ago, someone had them in a Skater trying to go 200+ MPH, but I haven't heard about that boat lately...

I'd love to hear your experience/knowledge on this topic...:food-smiley-007:

Dave Scott's/Bud Select's alcohol engines are the only ones I can think of right off hand that are close to that HP. I think they might be Sterlings.

racecrafters did it years ago. they were well before their time

2000 hp

you may want to talk to zul performance. we worked with him on a alchol motor that I think was 1800hp

RHC 03-23-2009 12:56 PM

I guess it depends on how radical you want 2000hp to be, if I wanted it to live and put lot's of hours on them , I would talk to Keith Eckhert about the 16cly alum engine that he brought to the Miami show . It should make 200hp with a few mod's and still be realiable .

I thought that they were out of business? I searched posts here on them and it seemed that they had some trouble keeping them in one piece...are you familiar with any of this?

As you may or may not have seen on our website, we have opened Nauti Marine up for full service on high-performance boats. The alcohol engines you are referencing were originally built by Sterling but we brought them in-house and made several vital changes to them. They performed very good on a linear dyno ... :drink:

KiloKat what is the expected life span on those engines along with maintenance.
Thanks

Not long - there were built just for special applications. Two primary things restrict 100% alcohol motors from normal use. The first is fuel consumption which can exceed twice the amount of an equivalent gas motor but more importantly are the aluminum connecting rods. Alcohol basically "explodes" in the combustion chamber versus "burn" like gas. Aluminum rods "absorb" the explosive shock with each combustion without breaking. However, they will fatigue and stretch rather quickly under full load.
Hope this is helpful ...

What about the biggest offering from Chief? I thought it was in that range.

Brad Zastrow 03-26-2009 02:08 PM

2000 hp will not live long. Get a turbine. Even 1500 hp engines are a lot of work and money to keep running. Also require race gas. Rod's 2000 hp engines had a lot issues.
I will say it again get a turbine. I do like the V16 Keith is working on. Two V8 900 hp NA engines coupled.

Ummm 1,500 Hp. turbo's are living very well !:drink:
Change the valve train every 250 hours.
Bottom end seems to always look beautiful...........

And be for you suggest it..........No turbo Lag either.
Boost comes on at 1,850 rpm's on the dyno.

I Know most people can't dyno this low, but I'm not talking smack either. Technology has come a long way if your in the right camp. :drink:

Thanks
Jon

www.nelsonracingengines.com

Tom Nelson @ Nelson Racing Engines can build you a turbo or blown setup in the 2000hp range....

Here is a link to a turboed setup that makes 2400-2500 on race and 1700-1800 on pump....

I think he has a 1 year warranty as well....

All his engines can be marinized and he has done plenty....

Great question. Here's what I suggest.

Listen closely to Kilo Kat and Brad Zastrow. They know from whence they speak. With 2,000 hp output, turbine engines are the only things that will even approach "reliability." It's not even arguable.

But if you really want it from the proverbial horse's mouth, call Mike D'Anaballe at Sterling. He'll tell you he can build a 2,000-hp engine. He'll also tell you, straight up, that it won't live very long.

A street engine will not last in a marine aplication

That sounds awsome...! Are they a lot quieter than the supercharged stuff, or at that power level do they still scream pretty loud?

Moving2Miami 03-26-2009 10:18 PM

Lots of great info here..Thanks!

I am not currently in the market, but may be soon, I was just curious of where the latest technology has taken us...I jst don't wanna mislead anyone..

Thanks again!

You run them at half throttle for 249 of them. :drink:

So I guess Tommy @ Chief engines does the same?

Rules change with Turbo's,.....the reliability is there. :drink:
