Default Form the East side of Fl, to the West

I have heard that you can go from the east coast to the west coast by water, without going around the keys.

On a map it looks like you go down the St. Lucie Canal, across Lake Okechobee, and then down the calosahatchee river into Ft. Myers.

Has anybody tried this? Is there a better way. Travel would be in a sport cruiser.

What about no wake zones, speed limits, gas stations on the water etc??

A buddy of mine has run his 18' Whaler from Rhode Island to Ft Meyers down and back the last three winters. (He leaves the boat in Ft Meyers for the winter)

He just crossed the Okeechobee waterway on Friday heading north. He said it's a great trip!

Need a route to go from lauderdale to the west coast and then all the way to TX.

For future reference. Never really read anything that actually had an entire route mapped out to get something like this accomplished.

Yes it is done daily by many......Watch the lake level since we are in a drought and the lake gets low about this time of year. My uncle crossed late last summer (rainy/ hurricane season) in a 75 Lazzara with no troubles.

From the St Lucie inlet there will be areas of no wake from just inside the inlet to just west of the FL turnpike during manatee season (ends May 1st). Lots of straight canals with nothing but woods on both sides. Several locks to cross as well. I believe you cross the lower 1/4 of the lake to hit the canal on the west side.
