BAD HTM SR 24 03-21-2002 12:07 AM

Just took delivery of my 2002 2500HD Duramax/Allison Crew Cab

I got so mad that i got out bidded on OffshoreBids.com for that 1100SC i had to go and buy something to make up for it:D . I drive by a large Chevy dealer every day and always glance and see if they have gotten a 2500HD Duramax/Allison Crew Cab.They finally got one yesterday morning,so i went and cleaned up my 2000 2500 LT, 4 wheel and went in to see if i could buy this truck at a descent price. After a 1 hour test drive i knew i had to have the new truck. I probably would of paid sticker on it ,thing drives excellent and the power is unreal.Dealer didnt know what the fuel mileage was, said it was to new of a motor:confused: .Does anyone know what kind of mileage to expect out of this truck.I am taking a 10 hr trip on saturday ,so iwill find out for sure then.I am going to put bigger tires on tomorrow night ,it comes with 245's on it.I will post some picks tomorrow.

candyman35 03-21-2002 12:25 AM

BAD HTM SR 24,

Congratulations! If you like the truck now, just wait until you tow with it. I have an 01 2500hd 4X4. I have been averaging 15.8 in the city. Your mileage will start out at 12.6 and continue to get better. It takes around 5,000 miles for the motor to loosen up.
I hate the 245's. There are some issues about going to bigger tires with the Allison. The dealer can reprogram the speedo but the shift points for the Allison get messed up. I have seen a few Dmax's driving around with 285's. They look sweet.

Go to one of the diesel sites and do a search on tire size and Dmax. You should be able to find some information out there.

Dan

BAD HTM SR 24 03-21-2002 12:36 AM

Dealer says it has a tow rating of 17,000 is that true.I havent had time to read the owners manual yet.Should tow my HTMSR24 pretty easy. What ratio did you get in your rear end.I have a 373 in mine, truck only runs 97mph,that kind of sucks. How about yours. Do you know the adress for any of those sites.

candyman35 03-21-2002 12:44 AM

I believe the tow rating is 14,600. The 3.73 was the only ratio available with the Dmax. I have heard from reliable sources that the top end is 97. The bigger tires would help that. I remember a post on OSO about larger tires voiding the warranty. Someone had asked a question about putting a lift kit on a Dmax.

BAD HTM SR 24 03-21-2002 12:50 AM

I think that chevrolet has finally stepped up to the plate with this truck.I only wish that i could put a plow on it.I wont put a lift kit on it but i definetely want to go with bigger tires. What color is your truck. Mine is the Charcoal with the LT package, dark charcoal interior.

candyman35 03-21-2002 12:59 AM

Mine is Pewter. I also went with the LT and dark charcoal interior. It pulls my 35' like its not there. The Allison down shifts when your coming to a stop and slows the rig down which should help brake life. This truck replaced a Ford with a 460 and a 4.10 rear gear. There is no comparison. I can't wait till they offer the Dmax in a Suburban. My wife will be getting a new truck.:D

BAD HTM SR 24 03-21-2002 01:04 AM

My wife wanted me to get a Suburban, but no Duramax so no suburban.Any word on how the 496's are holding up.They did have a 496 in one on the lot but i had my heart set on the dmax. Thanks for the info on the sites Chris i am going to check them out now.

Dono 03-21-2002 01:31 AM

Hey i just bought one also. I can't bring it home until i give them my down payment. I'm waiting for my pay off on my totaled dodge. Mine is black crew cab swb duramax/ allison. loaded. leather int. and the whole nine yards. I'm taking it directly the the 4x4 shop for a 6" lift and 33's. the guy that owns the shop has one with the same set up and no shifting trouble and claims the lift wont void the warranty. The bigger tires may void the allison warranty. I'll hang on to the 245's in case i need warranty work;) I cant wait to get that bad boy home. Sick of this rental truck they gave me.
there's a diesel forum just like oso and all these guys talk about is their duramax and the upgrades the've done. I think its called the diesel page.com

Mark in So. MD 03-21-2002 03:07 AM

Whew am i glad everyone else likes them. I signed the papers on mine but of course i was picky and had to have it just perfect so i ordered one. It has been 4 weeks and no call that it has come in yet. Darn it. O well, just wait some more:)

Jassman 03-21-2002 08:11 AM

Whats the deal with changing the 245s. GM on all their 3/4 tons puts only 245. Why. My Z-71 1/2 ton came with 265s, and I changed to 285, looks better , and then bought a Hypertech programmer and changed the speedo calibration along with fine tuning. I want to do that with my 3/4 ton Avalanche.

Ike 03-21-2002 08:33 AM

They are an awesome truck. Mine is a crewcab 4wd dually and got 15.25 mpg on the first tank, can't wait to hook up the apache I know it will be like night and day from my 97 TD. Also two of my employes just bought an crew and ext cab duramax's and another is looking to get one. It will be like duramax heaven here.:D

formula1 03-21-2002 09:18 AM

Congratulations on your new purchase!! Just wanted to remind everyone who might be in the market for a new truck/suv to tow their rig this summer, I just got a fresh shipment of Duramax/Allision trucks in...2500HD's and 3500HD's. I also have
some Big Blocks too! So if you need a new Chevy give me a call @ 240-299-0995!!

Thanks
Steve

PS. We also have Dodge too..

jawbreakerkid 03-21-2002 09:22 AM

i have a '02 GMC 2500HD 4x4 SLT Crew Cab short bed w/ the D/A combo. my first tank was 15mpg, with a little over 5,000 miles on the truck, i range anywhere from 17-19mpg daily driving. i haven't towed for long enough trips to get a good avg. i would guess it in the 14mpg range. the first thing i did was switch the 245's to 265's....the dealer suggested it and performed work. i love it so far.

my '01 GMC 2500HD 4x4 SLE X-cab short bed w/ the 6.0 only gets 13mpg daily driving and 9-10mpg towing. the 6.0 is more responsive in daily driving though. i may put it for sale late this summer in case anyone is interested.

BAD HTM SR 24,

Congrats on your new 2500HD Duramax/Allison Crew Cab. I sure wish GM still offered the 454 which was the old 7.4. I have had two of the 8.1's, my first in an 01 Suburban and now my second in my 02 Avalanche. I love the 8.1 for two reasons one it is the Duramax is not offered in either the Suburban or the Avalanche and two I can not see the $7K in additional cost to add it. In this part of the N.E. Diesel fuel is more expensive then other fuels which kind of negates the MPG savings. Only thing not too cool about the 01 8.1 in the Suburban was that it would use a qt of oil between oil changes 3K miles. Only have 12K miles on The 02 8.1 Avalanche so not sure if it will be the same. Enjoy the new truck.

Sydwayz 03-21-2002 09:28 AM

The 7.4 is a 454.
The 8.1 is a 496.
An 8.2 is a 502.

You can tell I need to hit the water soon:)

cobra marty 03-21-2002 09:44 AM

How much and what kind of deal are you getting on these rigs? Any discount from list?

boot 03-21-2002 10:19 AM

BAD HTM SR 24, Congrats on the new truck !
You are worried about it only does 97 mph??
 My new Ford only did 90 !

THats OK ........ I have the cure . Western diesel computer chip . It over rides your speed limiter and gives you another 65 hp and about 125 ftlbs torque and gains 1-3 mpg.

My Ford now pins the speedo on 100 and keeps pulling about another 15 seconds till you hit the governer !!:D I have to check the GPS to see actual speed next time . If you want any info e-mail me at [email protected] I offer great deals to OSO members . Good luck with it ! JOE

Hold on a second guys! BADHTMSR24 might have some interesting info on this bid for you all....I don't want to say anything as the info I heard is second hand, but something a little underhanded may have happened on that auction.
You DID notice there wasn't a minimum bid, right? Hmmm....perhaps someone made an error in that? I'll let BADHTM post up if he wants to. But don't anyone feel too bad about not bidding on that puppy just yet, that motor may just turn up somewhere again.

Cobra Marty, I assume the question re list was directed at my post about new Chevrolet trucks. EVERYTHING is discounted especially for my fellow OSO members.

 Steve

BAD HTM SR 24 03-24-2002 07:18 PM

Just got back from my first trip with my new truck,i am very impressed to say the least. The wife and i both cant beleive how smooth of a ride it has.Had a average of 12.9 mpg on the highway at 82-87 mph.Truck only has 1012 miles on it so that fuel mileage should go up once it gets broke in some more.Cant wait to put the SR24 on the back and see how it handles it,i'm thinking ,pretty damn easy. Now i need to do some research on all the possibilities of a chip.Does anyone know if a chip will void the waranty.:(

Interested in a 2500 HD Crew cab long bed. What kind of price for a truck with all the options?
Thanks

That's why I went with the 2500 4x4 8.1 Avalanche, loaded to the max to include the Snow Plow prep package MSRP was $39,600 I only paid $35,365:) Glad you are happy with your new ride.

formula1 03-25-2002 05:23 PM

I got mine just before I left for the Kitty Hawk and loved and missed it while I was gone. I gave the break-in duties to my neighbor now he's pissed that I'm back. 02' 2500HD CrewCab shortbed 496(8.1) and I know your all gonna get me on this 1 2wheel drive. God Damnit's got tire roating power even with the new rim/tire package a set of 18's wraped in Goodyear Eagle F-1's at 275/60/18 front and 305/60/18 back. Dealer said nothing about voiding the Warr. with new tire/rim combo for the Allison tranny. Also Black on Pewter Leather all for 37,340 out the door, just can't wait for summer to roll around to spank some Rustangs :D :D with it:cool:

Bad HTM
I have a 02 with 14000, mileage has not changed from
first tank. Gets 16 town and 20 hwy. The dealer installed
285's & mags before it left the lot, it is a red crew cab with
short bed. If your truck runs 97 it will likely pull
your 24 97mph. Good luck
