Ignition for 454's

My engines have the older point set up and recently I saw our found an electronic type converter that screws down in place of the points. Has anyone tried this type of set up. Ohterwise what is the cheapest but yet functional set up to go with. The engine I have are just 454 / 500 Hp's.
Thanks for your help.
John

Petronix ingition is what you are refering to. Very simple and inexpensive install. Did both my Mallory distributors with the Petronix Ignitor II ($109 each) and Petronix "Flame Thrower" expoxy (instead of oil for vibration/rough water) coils for $45 each. Support my 509s with 550 hp without a problem. Ordered mine through JEGS.

Good luck,
Jack

Thanks for the help. I knew I ran across those somewhere but couldn't remember what they were called and or if they worked well. Where the new coils a necessity or was that a little insurance?
Thanks again,
John

The coils are advertised or recommended if running their "Ignitor" kits. I also paid the extra 10 buck for the epoxy coil.

What about going to HEI simple one wire hook up and a tach wire. Less stuff to go wrong

I was wondering about that also. Would the automotive type you can buy rather inexpensively do the job or does this have to be labled marine?
Let me know your thoughts as well as what would do the trick.
thanks,
John

RE: HEI Ign.

Would this OK? I realize it doesn't have the screw down cap however outside of that what do you think? I'm amazed with how many distributors there are out on the market. There also some with rev. control as a kit for around 205.00. My 78 boat doesn't have the plug in merc. electronic module typically mounted on the exhaust or trans. So I'm not sure if this opens the door to more options or not. Also is the mechanical advance the way to go???
