Need Help with Carb Motor, Wont start??
Ok guys, Just got done putting the motors back together and everything is buttoned up on the engines. I went to start the motors and one fired right up, with no problems. The other seems like it isn't getting any fuel in the carb. Theres some fuel in the secondary fuel bowl(like 2 squirts), but nothing in the primary. Did nothing to the carbs or fuel system, just took it off and set it to the side.
I topped off the fuel filters with gas, so I know thats not it. Theres gas coming out of the line but it not filling the carb. ???? I have a poker run saturday so I need to fix this Fast. Thanks guys |
What engine and carb do you have? Sounds like the needle and seat kit is stuck. Some times you can tap on the carb in the area of the needle and seat a little if you know where it is mounted inside and it might free it self up as long as it is not to clogged up on the inside.

Swap carbs from one motor to the other, just to make sure thats the problem, then if it is, have your bad carb looked at.

BB 509 with Holly 750 carb.
Also a Mechanial fuel pump. I like the tap on the carb to free it loose. I'll try that first |

If the bowls are empty except for a little in rear bowl its probably not the needle they ussually stick open and flood the engine thru the bowl vent. Does your boat have fuel cut offs someone may have shut off? Also you could do a vacum and pressure test on the on the pump? Hope any of tthese ideas get you to your Poker run.

Fill the primary bowl manually with fuel through the float plug on the side. See if it fires.

Either the pump is sucking air somewhere (do you have a generator on board) or the diaphragm is shot and you are likely putting fuel in the oil pan. Be sure and check your engine oil for fuel smell. It is also possible that one of the check valves in the fuel pump is not seating which is no great risk but it would cause weak fuel pressure. |
Wobbles right. This test just verifies carb function. Next you should see if the primary fuel bowl is maintaining level while running. If you made new AN lines over the winter you could have a piece of shaved rubber blocking the carb inlet at the needle. That's what I would look at if the float level drops.
