getting boat off trailer in my back yard: help?
I am trying to detail the bottom of the boat in the comfort of my back yard. Are there any tricks and or tools to get the boat off the trailer so that I can get int oall the nooks and crannies, then slip the trailer right under again? The boat is a 27' Activator
Thanks. Randy |

A frames and straps are the best way...Boat stands and a floor jack will do the trick in a pinch... |
build a lake and a ramp in your back yard:cool:

boat
give me the boat that way you dont have to worry about it:drink:
|
Buy a mask and do it in the water!:ernaehrung004:
|
The last time we did that, we used a big fork lift and then set the boat on blocks
|
if it were me i would let the trailer down down full at the front and prop at the back corners with barrols or stands
then if you have a forklift or big engine hoist park at the port or stb side and lift then wheel your trailer out and prop at front on the keel with a barrol or block of wood |
I picked my 30 Sutphen up once upon a time like we do to set up for boat shows. One big a-frame lift in the back with two winches ( one for each hook on each side) and another big a-frame on the bow hook. Drive the trailer out from under it and then set it down on those nice Yardarm roller craddles, or styrofoam, block, whatever. I was able to redo my trailer without leaving the boat in the water for three weeks.

These guys are idiots................
1st Crack open a case of beer with your buddies (helps with decision making) 2nd Tie transom to biggest tree in yard and spray trailer bunks with WD-40. One can per bunk....... 3rd Hook up truck to trailer, mention to your buddies "watch this" and floor it....... Make sure drive(s) are up so they won't get damaged. When your done tie the trailer to the tree and hook a rope to the bow eye and just pull it back on the trailer with your truck........ Then post pics for all here to learn from..........:food-smiley-007: |

Because if not,,,how will u detail it ????? Then back the trailer in to the hole and jank the 4X4's out undernith the boat .DONE:ernaehrung004: |

what do you mean by detail? If you mean wax it - dont..it will slow you down. i would pay to have a fork life pick it up and then you can wash the bottom.
I have done the whole tie the transom to the tree and pull the trailer out from under the boat back in the day...not the best idea |

Thanks. Randy Stop by your local marina and ask to rent their yard arms. They are specificaly made to get your boat off the trailer. Very quick and easy to do. It will take you longer to get them out of the truck than to get the boat off the trailer. Funny... two pages later and finally a SERIOUS answer! |
Maybe I could buy a few yard arms. Then a jack, a few blocks and I suppose that's it, huh?
|
Yard arms are VERY expensive
|
The yard arms have jacks built into them, and like said above...they are very expensive.

Funny chit but, on a serious note; if you're going to do this in your backyard as you mentioned, think about settleage. If you do it on ground/grass, there is a definite danger of settling and falling on your face!!! You should use very large bases to distribute the weight as much as possible.
You've probably considered this but if not, I'd hate to be reading about you in some thread on OSO. Good luck and check everything twice. |

Maybe overinflate them first for even more drop when deflated? Seems like that would give you an easy 5-6 inches. |

Thing is, I want to re-do my bunks. I need to trace the hull so I can cut notches into the bunks for the steps, etc. I didnt want to feel rushed at a marina. So it's not just cleaning the boat.
|
Leave the trailer under the baot and jack the boat up one section at a time. Clean the spot, set the boat down and move on to the next section.

The only reasons a boat needs to be clean between the bunks:
You keep on davits and hoist very high, or You plan to get drunk at beach and let tide go way out and want a shiny hull to reduce your embarrassment, or you plan to roll the boat, swim to safety and watch the rescue crew slip and slide while trying to rescue you. If you really want to go through with it, take the easy route. Hire a bulemic, crack-addicted Hooter's whore and pay her to shimmy between the bunk and rub it down. Jeesh, i gotta spell it out for you. |

Not that tough or dangerous if done correctly. Work in the field and have unloaded numerous boats of all sizes. Position the boat where you need it to be. The more level the surface the better. It does not matter if you are on concrete or grass or sand. Lower the trailer jack all the way down. At the stern you will build cinder block stacks at each corner. Not single stacks but side by side. Alternate the next two blocks, and the final block #. The corner of the boat must be dead center of your top block of the stack. Finish the stacks with lumber to protect the boat, usually a piece of 2x4. Raise the jack stand and lock the boat into position. I use a engine cherry picker with the legs extended and the boom extended at about a 45 from the bow. This allows more clearance for removing the trailer. Use a rope and cushion and carefully raise the bow till you see daylight between the boat and bunks. thats high enough. Pull the trailer as far forward as the hoist will allow. Build another block stack forward. Usually around 1/3 back from the bow. Approximately windshield position. Set it down gently and remove hoist and trailer. Revers the procedure to reload. most often you just add to the bunks to make up for the steps wood on wood add to the step up dont cut out |
