radar guns

A few weeks ago somebody posted about an inexpensive radar gun. Some of the board members were going to order one. Did anybody get theirs and have you had a chance to try it out?

Mike J 03-24-2002 05:41 PM

Yep Used mine last Thur.
Worked great.
$79.99 Heartland America,
Item #V3-61741

Steve Just noticed your
from St. Josephs MO. Are
you close to the Wellcraft
Dealer, Was wondering what
happened to Don Johnsons
old 43ft Scarab.
Shipped it from Ventura CA
Last year.
Im going to send photos to
the Scarab section Look
for Em.

stevebaretta 03-24-2002 06:00 PM

Mike J, Was it going to the LOTO?

Mike J 03-24-2002 06:10 PM

Nope, It went on a Well-
craft truck as a backhaul
to St.Josephs, Same dealer
Marina that Don ran the
river race at.
Heared they put bigger
motors in it.
I did the rerig on it and
Maintained it for a lot of
years in Ventura CA.
Kind of like having a old
Friend move away.
Could now be At LOTO.

There's not a Wellcraft dealer near me, unless there is one in Kansas City that I don't know about. Post the picture I'd like to see it.

enticer 03-24-2002 07:56 PM

Mike J pays 79.99 and the link puder listed (Northern Tool) now wants 99.99 ... supply in demand justifies prices increase .. :) ;)

Mike J 03-24-2002 09:36 PM

Same Gun as Northern.
No comment on what boat
was tested,
All I can say 100mph +
in the ocean in SoCal.
Also used 2 GPS's.
I really Do Not care if anyone Trusts me or not.
Just trying to help
Steve I will look at the
Shipper.

$79.99

Reckless32 03-24-2002 10:11 PM

Ordered the one from heartland (79.99) right after seeing the post. Still waiting for it to come in. Hopefully this week....

Rick

stevebaretta 03-24-2002 10:29 PM

Reclkless, When you get yours and have a chance to try it, let us know your results.

boot 03-24-2002 10:43 PM

THe one from Northern says 10-120mph & the other says 5-150mph

Mike J 03-24-2002 11:53 PM

Steve: Your right, I had
the right state but the
wrong ST.
Don Johnsons boat was shipped to St.Charles MO.
SO guess you should Order the radar gun from Northern for $99.00.

INDY27 03-25-2002 07:06 AM

what is the maximum distance that it is accurate from?

Smitty 03-25-2002 10:03 AM

I just got one from Heartland America. It is more like a toy for kids in my opinion. It says it only has a range of 60 feet in the manual. I tried it and did not work well enough for me. I am sending it back. A friend told me to look in Model Airplane News magazine. He said they sell long range ones for around 150.00.

stevebaretta 03-25-2002 10:41 AM

Bigwavz, That's good to know. I wanted one I could shoot from shore, as some of my buddies go by full blast. Thanks for the update.

INDY27 03-25-2002 10:46 AM

I kinda figured that, most of the time you get what you pay for!

29 OUTLAW 03-25-2002 11:38 AM

I've got one. Tested it by sticking it out the window of my truck as I drive down the road. I get about 2-3 reading that are right on what the speedo is reading. Then for no reason I get a reading that is way out in leftfield - Bottom line - who knows.

Reckless32 03-25-2002 11:42 AM

You betcha! I'm gonna run it against a couple of different handhelds to compare accuracy. I'm envisioning a fun toy to have onboard....:D

Now, if it would only get here this week I'll be trying it out this weekend. May even walk out near the street and play...

Got my box-anchor in though....;)

HavasuCat 03-25-2002 12:39 PM

I have used both a radar gun (quality expensive Stalker gun) and my Garmin gps, and IMHO I think the gps is easier and more accurate to use. The gun speeds can vary depending on the person that is using it. If the gun is not aimed correctly speeds can vary. Not to mention they are a ***** to hold steady at triple digit speeds.

Reckless32 03-25-2002 12:52 PM

I hear ya, but I personally am just buying one for chits and giggles because the price is so cheap. Nothin' but a toy for me..

Mike J 03-25-2002 01:11 PM

My posts are just to say
that, For My use its only
a Tool as I build and repair Hi-Performance Boats.
You have to aim the gun at
a large object when you ON
a boat, I can't remember
ever seeing a motor cop
riding his bike with one
hand and using the gun with the other.
Its just another way for me to compare Boats and
compare changes to boats.
Works for me.
Someone should put up a
thread about items dropped
or lost/destroyed while
boating, Should be some
funny stories.
Mike J.

Dredgeking 03-25-2002 10:23 PM

forget radar. there are too many variables and too many outcomes. gps is too easy and has no variables. the repeatability of the gps beats the radar.

stevebaretta 03-25-2002 10:32 PM

I was just thinking that if it worked, maybe a few of my friends might have our own little shoot-out. and a radar gun
to register the speeds from shore or a nearby boat would be great.

MIKEHTMSR24 03-26-2002 05:20 PM

Sucks

I sent mine back. I was shooting cars and it wouldn't pick up till they were right on you. I don't want to be shooting boats that close:eek:
You get what ya pay for
