Easy way to add HP to 350 mag ???
1 Attachment(s)
What are some Ideas currently I have a 350 mag somewhere
in the 280 hp I checked serial it a roller motor if that helps, I would be happy with about 30 more hp running alpha 2 1.50 gears thu- hub exh. all Ideas thanks |
Depending on what ya want to spend. There are Headers, for beter exhaust flow and if you dont have a budget there is supercharging. Vortech and Procharger both make great marine applications
|
Easy???
Thru hull exhaust would be the first step for more hp. Then I'd probably start with heads/intake/carb mods.
|
well you have through hub exhaust, so I would get some aftermarket manifolds and go through hull, will make a good power increase, also go up a pitch on prop at the same time. good luck
|
Hell I haven't done any head work in 15 years exhuast manifolds
and the thru hull would be easy though. how about just carb and exhuast I dont know what carbs come on 92 350 mags I think its a Rochester I just bought the my women a 1 carat rock for Valentine's Day so the 8000 bucks I had is gone otherwise I could do wonders. Plus I'm stuck covering are Alex Bay Vacation 4 july week and that leave's me about 1500 to put into the motor. |

I've been told to put on 1.6 ratio roller rocker arms from Comp. Cams. You'll lower oil temp with less friction and your engine will think its running a bigger cam (stock is 1.5). You'll need 350hp to make open exhaust work and with new noise regs, I'm not going there on Inland Waterways. I'm running 56mph on gps with a stock 350/260hp Alpha 1 in my Glastron/Carlson CV-23. If I can break 60 with some mods, I'll be happy. I'm running a 14"/19P stainless factory prop. A 20 or 21P may work with a few more ponies. The 19P planes in 3 sec. I get the holeshot on the Bajas and Scarabs but they do catch up and pass me. They run 63-72mph on 23 and 24P Big Blocks.....Mike.

Be careful what u do,that Alpha OD is right at the HP limit.
|
Speed2-??????????????? Merc put 454/330s in front of alphas
|
Hey twinn29, alpha/big block...
They all blow up too. Been there, done that. Twice. Got the Bravo One to prove it. They only put the alpha behind the big block in boats wehre the trs tranny would not fit. Such as my 1987 Baja 24 Sport.
You can run 300 hp thru an alpha as long as you don't hole shot like you're pulling skiers. And keep it in the water!!!!! Anything more than that would be putting a time limit on the alpha. A short time limit. |
i believe all the BB alpha setups used 136 gear ratios as opposed to the normal 150. i believe that is the only reason those alphas had half a chance at living more than a season.
|
Mike- I really dont want to get into this but........I know a guy who has a 87 32 Pachanga, twinn 330s and alphas, not exactly a "light" boat, had the boat for years, lots of people, lots of holeshots, never had a problem............
|
Not arguing with you....
Mine....454 ci. 330hp, ~5000 lb boat, never lasted more than two months. Rebuilt it, blew it up. NEVER did hole shots. Bought the Bravo.:D Even a 32 Pachanga is putting less stress on an alpha than my Baja did. Hp to wieght ratio thing at work here. G-Force runs twin alpha's on his 32 also, and has also never had an issue that I know of. But I think he is adding Bravos due to bigger hp motors.
Just don't want anyone to go thru what I did. And the gear ratio was somewhere near 1.36, but not really sure what it was. Been 7 years!!!! Happy with Bravo performance. Never had a hp related issue with a Bravo. Take care......off to bed now. 5:00 start time in the a.m.!!!!! |
WATERFOUL is right with the twin engine the drive will hold up a lot better. And it is torque that will break the alpha drive not hp. A small block with 400 hp will not snap the drive as fast as a big block with 330 hp in the same boat. I used to have a LOT of hp going tru an alpha and only broke it once due to excesive gear lash. Later on I was running an alpha SS and a lot more hp ( over 500 hp out of a ford 302 ) and then I did start to grenade the drive.

Great now Im worried! I really wished it had a bravo
but it dont . I do know it weights around 3900 and the prop is a stainless 21" Vented. sounds a little high? anyways it should be 1.50 ratio , I have a merc power prop2 that shifts from 15 to 21, so that should take care of the hole shot problem . So when they do go alpha2 that is what is it that fails uppers or the lowers? do those drive showers help alpha's? I would guess not that much if the failing is related to high torque figuers. Oh anyone want my 350mag alpha 2 Ill swap ya for a 502 bravo ha ha |
WWW TOPDJ COM,
Go with the through hull exhaust. It should give you 2-4 MPH and will sound a lot better. I would put on a switchable exhaust like Corsa makes. Make sure that it will be compatible with whatever headers you may want to add in the future. You'll need to replace the cam to get the full benefit of a new carb. A friend added through hull exhaust, mild cam and carb to his 302 OMC and picked up eight MPH. That was with the stock exhaust. Good luck, Dan |
If I had the money, I'd swap the factory intake for a Performer RPM, keeping the Q-Jet, and change the exhaust manifolds.
Then I'd think about changing the cam, lifters and rockers. |
