The Golden Nugget belongs to a buddy of mine. It's named after his Grand Prix Boat of 70's. The pictures don't do it justice - It's beyond beautiful! He just took delivery of another bare hull and is getting ready to rig it. Butch has numerous National championships under his belt in limited hydroplanes. He ran an offshore boat a few times back in the 80's. The offshore boat was an unknown/unproven hull design from MI -Skater - Boy how times have changed! If anyones interested, I'll direct him to this thread when he gets back in town.

Butch is a great guy and shows up at many of the vintage races. We swap boat rides. I built that racer G1 MISS COLUMBIA, shown earlier in this thread. she was built from historic original plans. First we powered her with an original Packard Gold Cup 621 engine. Later we repowered her for a subsequent owner with a BPM V12 730 cid with six weber IDF carbs. Attached are photos of a recent project PALM BEACH DAYS. also historically accurate to original lines. She is powered with a 548 offshore engine w/ Dana Marine Exhausts. Motor built by Robert Mishko from Bean Station Tennessee, a former lead engine builder at Innovation Marine. Hope you enjoy. Mark

Sweet boats. Beautiful proportions and craftsmanship :drink:

Are Palm beach Days And Miss Columbia the same hull?

Howitzers 05-31-2009 11:52 PM

MISS COLUMBIA was a George Crouch design and PALM BEACH DAYS is a John Hacker design. She is built off the same lines as EL LAGARTO, the 3 time Gold Cup Champion from the 1930s. Regards, Mark

I got to admit, I still got a special place in my heart for beautiful wood and these boats are the perfect example of craftsmanship in wood and the love of building handbuilt boats. Very, Very nice!
Those flat bottoms might be a bit hard on the rump though in offshore waters.

Best Regards,
Ray @ Raylar

Flat yes but, many people are not aware that those old Hackers and Garwoods were running stepped hulls. Everybody thinks Reggie innovated the stepped hull - NOT.

Those old boats were true hot-rods in every sense. Engines were full-out race, many were straight out of airplanes, some with four Rolls Royces are whatever, rigging was hand made and very heavy-duty. We go to the Clayton, NY antique race boat regatta whenever we can. Boats from all over the country and Canada come to this venue. It is just amazing to see how these old monsters were built. They didn't know how to build anything other than the best they possible could. Custom built in every regard. Whats cool too is that they take these irreplacable works of art and history and blow 'em up and down the St. Lawrence full-tilt. It is cool!!!
